Stump Pass at the south end is the tarpon highway between the Gulf and the Charlotte Harbor system, and the barrier islands below it are boat-access-only beaches you’ll often have to yourself.

It’s a designated aquatic preserve: six miles of shallow, mangrove-lined bay with grass flats, oyster bars, and dock lines, protected from the development that scraped a lot of other Florida shorelines clean. The bay also carries redfish on the bars, trout over the grass, and mangrove snapper on anything hard. Snook and redfish regulations move — verify the current slot and season at FWC before you fish.

What is Stump Pass and how does it fish?

Stump Pass is the inlet at Lemon Bay’s south end — the connection between the Gulf and the whole Charlotte Harbor system, which makes it a mandatory checkpoint for migrating tarpon May through July. Fish the outgoing tide at the pass mouth, or track the beach schools running the Manasota Key shoreline. Between tarpon windows, the pass and its swash channels produce snook, redfish, and big jacks.

One correction worth knowing: Stump Pass Beach State Park (900 Gulf Blvd, 8 a.m. to sunset) has no boat ramp. It’s the walk-in surf and shark-tooth beach at Manasota Key’s south tip, and a kayak jump-off to the islands east of the park. The park’s own species list for the surf: flounder, snook, trout, snapper, whiting, sheepshead, and tarpon.

Which islands can I boat to from Englewood?

Don Pedro Island, Knight Island, and Little Gasparilla sit south of Stump Pass with no bridge to any of them — boat-access only. Anchor Gulf-side and you get empty beach, a surf trough that holds snook in summer and pompano in winter, and shark-tooth sifting without the Venice crowds. The ICW behind them runs to Placida and the Boca Grande causeway.

How do I fish Lemon Bay from a kayak?

Lemon Bay is one of the best kayak fisheries between Sarasota and Charlotte Harbor: it’s narrow enough to cross in minutes, protected from Gulf swell by Manasota Key, and shallow enough that most of the productive water is paddle-only anyway. The program:

• Launch at Indian Mound Park (free, dedicated small-craft area beside the ramp lanes) or from Stump Pass Beach State Park to work the pass-side islands.
• Morning route: paddle the west-shore mangrove line on the last of the incoming tide, casting soft plastics tight to the roots for snook; switch to the oyster bars mid-bay as the tide falls and look for tailing redfish.
• Summer bonus: juvenile tarpon and big snook prowl the residential canal mouths and Ski Alley edges at first light — a paddle-quiet approach is precisely why kayakers out-fish skiffs here.
• Winter: the deeper ICW edge holds trout and sheepshead when fronts chill the flats; you’re never more than a ten-minute paddle from lee shoreline in a north wind.

Watch the pass itself: Stump Pass current is legitimate on a big tide swing, and afternoon sea breezes turn the return paddle into work. Check NOAA tides and marine forecast before you commit to the south end.

Can kids fish in Englewood?

Yes — the low-stakes venues are good ones. Indian Mound Park’s shoreline and dock let kids soak shrimp for snapper, sheepshead, and jacks a few steps from the parking lot, with restrooms and a shaded shell-mound trail when the bite slows. The state park beach adds shark-tooth sifting — same fossil beds as Venice, smaller crowds. Ladyfish and jacks in the bay are the great equalizer: they bite all day and pull hard enough to make anyone grin.

Where do I get bait and tackle in Englewood?

Fisherman’s Edge Tackle, 4425 Placida Rd, is the serious local shop — it sits on the road between Englewood and Placida, so it’s also the last real tackle stop before Boca Grande. For live wells: netting your own pilchards on the outside bars is standard practice here in the warm months.

Can I fish Stump Pass from shore? Yes, from the state park side — surf and pass-mouth fishing on foot. The park is walk-in (parking at 900 Gulf Blvd) and closes at sunset, so the dawn bite means arriving at gate-open.

Are there shark teeth in Englewood? Yes — the same fossil beds that feed Venice’s beaches run down Manasota Key. Stump Pass Beach State Park is a productive, quieter alternative to the Venice beaches.

How far is Englewood from Sarasota by water? About 26 miles — roughly an hour-plus run down the ICW from Sarasota, which is why many anglers trailer down and launch at Indian Mound instead.

When do tarpon run Stump Pass? May through July, with June the safest bet. Fish the outgoing tide at the pass mouth at first light, or glass the outside beach for rolling schools working between the pass and the Venice Inlet to the north.

Is Lemon Bay wadeable? Parts of it — firm sand-and-grass edges near the bars wade well on lower tides, though much of the shoreline is soft mangrove mud better handled by kayak. Shuffle for rays and keep an eye on summer storm cells building over the mainland.
