Sarasota Bay runs deeper than Charlotte Harbor’s flats, so an intermediate line earns its keep here and blind-casting drifts produce even when there is nothing to see. When sun and tide line up, the same water becomes sight fishing with a fly rod.

What fly tackle do I need for Sarasota?

• Bay and dock lights: 8 wt, weight-forward floating line, 9 ft leader to 20 lb fluorocarbon (bump to 30 lb around dock pilings). At night, shorten the whole leader to 6–7 ft — it turns over better on short casts.
• Beach snook: 7–8 wt, floating line, 12 ft leader, 20 lb tippet, #2–#4 white flies.
• Tarpon: 11–12 wt, intermediate-tip line, 60–80 lb shock tippet on 16–20 lb class, 500+ yards of backing. You will see the backing.

Five patterns cover 90% of local work: Clouser minnow in chartreuse/white #2–#4, EP baitfish 3–4” in white/gray, the Grassett Snook Minnow (a local white pattern), the DT Special, small tan shrimp patterns, and black/purple toads for tarpon.

How do I fly fish the bay flats? (the entry-level game)

1. Motor upwind of a 3–6 ft grass flat — Buttonwood Harbor, Long Bar, the Middleground — kill the engine and drift with the wind.
2. Cast 45° ahead of the drift and let the Clouser sink for a 2–3 count.
3. Strip in 6–12” pulls with pauses. When a fish eats, strip-strike — never lift the rod trout-style.
4. Change depth by changing fly weight, not fly line.

Expect seatrout as the bread and butter, with ladyfish, jacks, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and pompano mixed in, and redfish on the shallow edges. Under the new 2026 regional rule, Sarasota Bay trout are open year-round with a 15–19” slot, 3 per person, and only 1 over-slot fish per vessel — check the FWC spotted seatrout page and verify current rules before you fish.

What is dock-light fly fishing?

The single highest-percentage fly fishery in Sarasota. Underwater dock lights along the ICW from south Sarasota Bay to Venice — the stretch locals call “Snook Alley” — concentrate glass minnows and shrimp after dark, and snook stack on the shadow edges to feed. Short accurate casts to visible fish: it is the beginner-friendliest version of fly fishing in salt.

The program: set up up-current and outside the light halo, cast a small white fly up-current so it swings through the shadow edge (not the bright center), dead-drift it, strip-strike, and immediately steer the fish away from the pilings. Rest each light after a hookup and rotate through a milk run of docks. Remember the lights are private property and the water is public: never touch the dock, one boat per light, keep the noise down. Snook season in the Sarasota Bay region is closed May 1–Aug 31 and Dec 1–end of February — most of this fishery is catch-and-release by rule, per FWC snook regulations.

How do I fly fish the beach for snook?

June through September, snook cruise the trough in inches of water along Siesta, Lido, Casey Key and Manasota Key — visible fish, sand bottom, no boat required. Take the 7–8 wt with a floating line, stretch the leader to 12 ft with 20 lb tippet, and carry #2–#4 white flies: small Clousers, the Grassett Snook Minnow, glass-minnow patterns.

Walk the dry sand at first light with the sun behind you, spot fish backlit against the white bottom, and cast parallel to the beach so the fly swims along the trough, not across it. Short leads — 3–6 ft ahead of a cruiser — and small strips. The entire window falls inside the May 1–Aug 31 regional snook closure, so it is a catch-and-release fishery by rule: keep fish wet, no dry-sand photos. Can I catch a tarpon on fly in Sarasota?

Yes — this is one of the best places on earth to try. From roughly May 15 to July 15, migrating strings of tarpon run the beaches off Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and Siesta Key, and the beachfront outside Boca Grande Pass. The fly game happens on the beaches, not in the pass crowd: stake out or pole along the bar, read the string’s line, and put a black/purple toad or EP baitfish two rod-lengths ahead of the lead fish.

Rate it 5 out of 5 difficulty. An 80–150 lb fish on 16–20 lb class tippet is an hour-plus fight, the casts are long and the shots are few. Do it once and the rest of fishing gets quieter.

What are the classic fly fishing mistakes here?

• Trout-setting on snook and tarpon. Strip-strike. Raising the rod pulls the fly out of a hard mouth.
• 9 ft leaders at night docks. Too long for short casts — cut to 6–7 ft.
• Overlining to beat the wind instead of learning the double haul. The haul is the actual fix.
• Buying a 12 wt before you can cast an 8. Casting skill transfers up; gear does not substitute for it.
