Fly Fishing for Redfish in Sarasota, FL
Fly fishing for redfish in Sarasota Bay: winter negative low tides expose tailing fish on Palma Sola and the Bulkhead. 8 wt, crab patterns, 3-6 ft leads.
How It Comes Together.
Redfish on fly in Sarasota is a winter tide game. From roughly October through March, negative low tides — strongest around the new and full moons, usually at dawn — drain the grass flats of north Sarasota Bay and put fish in water too shallow to hide: tails up on the Palma Sola grass, backs crawling the Bulkhead near Cortez off Bradenton, pods pushing wakes along Long Bar. Read the swings on the tides-and-currents guide.
The rig is standard: an 8 wt, floating weight-forward line, a 9-foot leader to 20-25 lb fluorocarbon, and crab or shrimp patterns — a Kwan or a tan EP crab does most of the work. Redfish feed nose-down, so the rules differ from every other local species: land the fly 3-6 feet ahead of the fish on its travel line, let it sit, and move it only when the fish is close enough to see it — one short strip, then nothing.
A fly dragged past a tailing red gets ignored; a fly it finds on the bottom gets eaten. Approach is half the fishery.
These are the spookiest fish in the bay in clear winter water — pole or wade, kill the trolling motor early, and cast to the edge of a school, never the middle. One blown cast flushes 50 fish off a flat. Cloud cover kills the sight windows, so pick high-sun mornings between fronts; sight-fishing tactics carry straight over.
Regulations in the Sarasota Bay region: 18-27 inch slot, one per person, two per vessel, open year-round, though many guides release every red on principle. Verify on the FWC red drum page and handle fish for release.
