Bottom Fishing in Sarasota: Reefs, Grouper & 2026 Snapper Seasons
Bottom fishing Sarasota's reefs and ledges: knocker rigs, tier-by-tier depths, 2026 red snapper dates, grouper tactics, and the descending-device rules.
How We Fish It.
Bottom fishing out of Sarasota runs in tiers: nearshore artificial reefs in 22–30 ft for snapper, grunts, and sheepshead, then the M-series reefs and hard-bottom ledges further out where the grouper live. Anchor up-current, drop a knocker rig baited with a live pinfish or cut sardine, and hold on. The mechanics are easy — the real skills are reading the sounder, judging weather, and knowing the season calendar.

Where are the bottom fishing spots near Sarasota?
Sarasota County runs a published artificial reef program with coordinates for every site — the list lives at the Sarasota County artificial reefs page, with a companion coordinates table at Florida Go Fishing and a printable WCIND reef PDF.
| Tier | Examples | Depth | Run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inshore structure | Dock/bridge pilings, bay reefs | 6–20 ft | Minutes |
| I-series reefs | I3 Roehr (22 ft), I2 Fisher (30 ft), I1 Silvertooth (30 ft) | 22–30 ft | 0.9–1.8 nm |
| M-series reefs | M15 (38 ft), M3 (43 ft), M16 (49 ft) | 38–49 ft | 4–8 nm |
| Snapper Banks | Natural hard bottom | 60–90 ft | 10–20 mi |
| Sarasota Middle Grounds | Ledges, live bottom | 100+ ft | ~40 mi |
The inshore tier is a real fishery, not a consolation: sheepshead stack on pilings and bay reefs December–March during the spawn, and mangrove snapper hold on anything with shadow and relief June–September.
What rig and tackle do you need?
Nearshore reefs (22–50 ft): 7’ medium-heavy spinning or conventional, 4000–6000 reel, 20–30 lb braid, 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leader.
- Knocker rig — the local default. A 1–3 oz egg sinker slides on the leader directly against a 2/0–4/0 circle hook. It drops straight, snags less, and telegraphs bites.
- Chicken rig — a two-dropper bottom rig for grunts, porgies, and lane snapper when you want numbers.
Offshore grouper (60–120 ft): 6’6”–7’ heavy conventional, 4/0-class or 30-size lever drag (or 8000–10000 spinning), 50–65 lb braid, 60–80 lb fluoro, 5/0–8/0 circle hooks, 4–8 oz egg or bank sinker.
Baits: live pinfish, pigfish, or squirrelfish for grouper; frozen sardines, threadfins, and squid for snapper and grunts; live shrimp or fiddler crabs for sheepshead. Chummed cut bait out-fishes a dead drop for mangrove snapper nearly every time.
Two rules are not optional for Gulf reef fish: non-stainless, non-offset circle hooks are required, and a descending device or venting tool must be rigged and ready on board — details at FWC’s descending device page.
When are the 2026 grouper and snapper seasons?
Seasons drive this fishery. The 2026 anchors:
| Species | 2026 Gulf season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Red snapper (private rec) | May 22–Jul 31, then Sep 1–Oct 4 + listed fall weekends | 140 days total — 2026 announcement |
| Gag grouper | Short September window in state waters | Confirm current dates on FWC before you run |
| Red grouper | Separate rules from gag | Check FWC current regs |
| Mangrove snapper | Open year-round | 10” Gulf minimum; see FWC snappers |
| Sheepshead | Open year-round | Best Dec–Mar on structure |
Fishing for reef fish from a private boat also requires the free State Reef Fish Angler designation, added to your license at GoOutdoorsFlorida. One trap that catches visitors every year: Gulf state waters end at 9 nautical miles, and state and federal seasons do not always match. Know which side of the line you’re anchored on. Verify current rules before you fish.
How do you actually fish a reef mark?
- Drive a circle first. GPS numbers put you within 100 ft of the structure, not on it. Idle a loop around the mark and watch the sounder for the actual relief and bait clouds.
- Anchor up-current so the boat settles back over the fish — or spot-lock just up-current of the structure. Anchoring directly on top of the numbers is the most common mistake on these reefs; fish sit up-current and your baits drift away from them.
- Start a chum line. A frozen chum block in a mesh bag turns a slow mark into a fast one, especially for snapper.
- Drop, then crank up two turns. Knocker rig to the bottom, one or two handle turns up. When the rod loads, reel — a circle hook sets itself; swinging pulls it free.
- Win the first 10 feet. Grouper decide the fight immediately. Full drag, rod low, turn the head away from the rocks.
- Release deep fish correctly. Anything coming up from 50+ ft with barotrauma goes back down on a descending device, fast. Return ‘Em Right ships free rigged descending gear to Gulf anglers.
What will you catch on Sarasota’s reefs?
Mangrove, lane, and (in season) red snapper; gag and red grouper; sheepshead in winter; grunts and porgies all day; hogfish as you get deeper; the odd flounder on the sand edges. Drop a jig instead of bait on the same marks and add amberjack and cobia to the list. Live-bait the same structure with a well full of pilchards — the live bait program transfers straight from the bay to the reefs.
When snapper get leader-shy mid-morning, drop to 20–25 lb fluorocarbon and downsize the hook. Bites return immediately; mangrove snapper on light leader over chum is the most reliable catch on this coast in summer.
FAQ
How far out do I have to go to bottom fish from Sarasota? Depends what you want. Snapper, grunts, and sheepshead come off the nearshore county reefs in 22–30 ft — a calm-morning trip for a 20 ft bay boat out of Big Pass or New Pass. Grouper and red snapper mean the M-series reefs and the ledges beyond them, which is a real offshore run and a bigger boat. Check ramp options on our boat ramps guide.
Do I need the State Reef Fish Angler designation? Yes, if you’re the angler targeting reef species from a private rec boat — it’s free at GoOutdoorsFlorida. Charter clients are covered by the boat.
Is a descending device really required? Yes — rigged and ready, by state and federal rule, whenever you fish for reef fish in the Gulf. It also works: released grouper and snapper survive at far higher rates when sent back down.
What’s the best beginner trip? A summer morning on a nearshore county reef with frozen sardines and a knocker rig: mangrove snapper, grunts, and porgies, with a chum bag working. It is this coast’s “first offshore trip” for a reason.
When is sheepshead season? Open year-round, but December–March is when big spawners aggregate on pilings, bridges, and nearshore reefs. Live shrimp or fiddlers on a #1 hook, light leader.
