What fish can kids actually catch?
The honest ranking, by odds of bent rod per hour:
- Pinfish and grunts — instant bites on shrimp bits near any structure. This is what keeps a small kid in the game.
- Mangrove snapper — around every pier piling, aggressive in summer, and dinner-worthy at 10+ inches.
- Ladyfish — jumps like a mini tarpon, fights hard, zero table value, maximum kid delight.
- Sheepshead — winter pier fish (Dec–Apr) on shrimp or fiddler crabs against the pilings.
- Whiting and pompano — the beach options; a kid can wade and cast a small jig at Turtle Beach or Lido.

What’s the best age to take a kid fishing?
