The 2026 Gulf gag grouper season is short and specific: federal waters open September 1 at 12:01 a.m. and close October 1 at 12:01 a.m. — the month of September. Florida’s Gulf state waters open the same day but close after two weeks, September 1–14. Outside those windows every gag goes back, ideally on a descending device.
When is gag grouper season in 2026?
| Waters | 2026 gag season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gulf federal waters (beyond 9 nm) | Sept 1 – Oct 1 (12:01 a.m.) | 2026 recreational ACL 499,000 lb / catch target 399,000 lb gutted weight |
| Florida Gulf state waters (inside 9 nm) | Sept 1 – 14 | Set by FWC executive order — confirm before the trip |
| Everything else | Closed — catch and release only | Descending device or venting tool required gear |
Sources: the NOAA Fisheries 2026 gag season bulletin and FWC’s Gulf grouper page. The Gulf gag stock is classified as overfished with overfishing occurring, which is why the window keeps shrinking. Verify current rules before you fish — these dates move.
One trap for charter clients: a vessel holding a valid federal charter/headboat permit for Gulf reef fish is bound by the federal closure everywhere, so when federal waters are shut it cannot possess gag inside the 9-mile line either. The Gulf Council’s season announcement spells it out.
Gags hold on hard bottom and ledges, so a gag trip starts with a run offshore.
Where do gag grouper hold off Sarasota?
Gags are the opposite of red grouper: they want vertical relief. Ledges, rock piles, wrecks, and artificial reefs — anything that casts a sonar shadow. Off Sarasota that means:
| Structure | Depth | When |
|---|---|---|
| Sarasota Bay rock piles, pass channels | 8–25 ft | Dec–Mar (closed season — release only) |
| Nearshore reefs: One Mile, Three Mile, Seven Mile North/South | 20–42 ft | Nov–Mar |
| Sarasota County M-series reefs (M-1 through M-4) | ~40 ft | Fall through spring |
| M-9, 40–60 ft ledges | 60 ft | September season, state-waters boats |
| Deep ledges and wrecks (Bay Ronto, 110 ft) | 80–150 ft | Summer; September for federal-waters boats |
GPS numbers for the county reefs are on the Sarasota County reef list and the Manatee County reef list; both counties also publish official pages, and FWC keeps a statewide artificial reef locator.
The seasonal migration is the whole game. Cool water (November–March) pushes gags shallow — 20–50 ft, sometimes right into the passes. Warm water slides them back out to 80–150 ft.
In September, expect quality fish on mid-depth structure in 60–120 ft. State-waters-only anglers should work the M-series and the 40–60 ft ledges inside 9 nautical miles during the two-week state window.

What tackle do you need for gag grouper?
Heavy. The first 20 feet of the fight decides who wins — a gag hooked at the ledge is back in the rocks in two seconds if you give it any line.
- 60–100 lb braid, 80 lb fluorocarbon leader, drag effectively locked.
- 4/0–6/0 class conventional reel or a heavy jigging setup on a short, stout rod.
- Knocker rig with a live pinfish, grunt (“piggie”), or big scaled sardine dropped tight to the structure. Circle hooks are required with natural bait — non-stainless everywhere, and non-offset as well in Florida state waters, per FWC reef fish gear rules.
- Big dead baits — whole squid, ladyfish chunks — work when fish are lit.
Hooked up, the rod stays bent and the handle keeps turning until the fish is 30 ft off bottom. Pumping gives slack; slack loses gags.

Can you troll for gag grouper off Sarasota?
Yes — slow-trolling big lipped plugs over 20–40 ft hard bottom is the classic fall and winter Sarasota technique, and it is the best way to find new rocks. Mann’s Stretch 25/30-class plugs on 50–80 lb gear, 4–5 knots, working the depth line where the plug just ticks bottom. Mark every strike; you are building a ledge library for September. More on the method in our trolling guide.
Remember the calendar: that killer shallow bite happens during the closed season, so it is a catch-and-release fishery. Handle fish fast and send them back down.
Hard bottom in 20 to 40 feet of water is where the winter plug bite happens.
How do you plan the two-week state season?
Fourteen days, September in Florida — meaning afternoon storms and at least one tropical system on the map. A realistic plan for a state-waters boat out of Big Pass or New Pass:
- Scout before September 1. The fish do not know the date. Run the M-series line in late August, drop a camera or a bait, and mark which numbers hold gags. Do not burn season days searching.
- Fish the first calm window, not the calendar. The season opens whether or not the Gulf cooperates. When a two-day light-wind window shows in the forecast, go — do not save it for the weekend.
- Hit small stuff first. The obvious public numbers get pounded on opening day. The unnamed 40–60 ft ledges and scattered rock you marked trolling last winter out-fish M-1 by mid-week.
- Carry two limits’ worth of live bait. Pinfish-trap the grass flats the evening before or sabiki the channel markers at first light. Twenty-plus frisky baits per angler is the number; gags mangle baits even when they miss.
- Leave when you limit. Two fish per person comes fast on a good mark. Boxed out by 10 a.m., the rest of the day converts to mangrove snapper on the same structure with lighter leaders.
What are the gag grouper rules beyond the season dates?
| Rule | 2026 value |
|---|---|
| Minimum size | 24” total length |
| Bag limit | 2 per person per day, within the 4-grouper aggregate |
| Captain and crew (for-hire) | Zero bag |
| State/federal line (Gulf) | 9 nautical miles |
| Required designations | Free State Reef Fish Angler for private-boat anglers — GoOutdoorsFlorida.com |
| Required gear | Descending device or venting tool rigged and ready (DESCEND Act details); dehooking device; circle hooks with natural bait |
Biology drives the caution: gags are protogynous hermaphrodites and the stock skews heavily female, so removing the big fish hits spawning capacity hard. Species background is on the Gulf Council gag page.
Every gag caught outside the open season goes back down on a descending device.
How do you tell a gag from a red grouper?
Gag: brown-gray with darker worm-like or kiss-shaped markings arranged in boxy patterns, pale mouth, squared-off tail. Big old males — “black gags” — turn charcoal-bellied with copper backs.
Red grouper: rusty red-brown, red-orange mouth interior, rounded tail, and a 20” minimum instead of the gag’s 24”. Both eat the same baits on the same bottom in 60–100 ft, so know the difference before anything goes in the box. Side-by-side photos are on our red grouper page.

FAQ
Can you keep gag grouper in Florida state waters right now? Only September 1–14, 2026 in Gulf state waters. The rest of the year is catch-and-release. Confirm the current executive order on FWC’s grouper page — dates have changed mid-year before.
How far out do you catch gags off Sarasota in September? Federal-waters boats: 10–30 miles, 60–120 ft. State-waters boats: inside 9 nautical miles — M-series reefs and the 40–60 ft ledges.
What is the gag grouper size limit in the Gulf? 24 inches total length, 2 fish per person within the 4-grouper aggregate.
Why is the gag season so short? The Gulf stock is overfished and undergoing overfishing per the latest assessment. The 2026 recreational annual catch limit is 499,000 lb gutted weight with a catch target of 399,000 lb, and September is how NOAA fits the quota.
How big do gags get? The Florida record — also the IGFA all-tackle record — is 80 lb 6 oz, caught off Destin by Bill Smith on October 14, 1993 (Florida saltwater records). Off Sarasota, 8–25 lb is the everyday range and 30 lb+ comes off the deep wrecks.
Is winter gag fishing worth it if you can’t keep them? Best bite of the year in 20–50 ft, minutes from the pass. Bring the descending device and treat it like tarpon fishing — the fight is the product.
