How’s the tarpon bite in Sarasota right now?
Winding down, which is normal for the third week of July. The big May–June beach schools have thinned as spawned-out fish scatter, but there are still players: singles and small pods along the beaches off Longboat, Siesta, and Casey Key at first light, fish rolling in the passes on the strong hill tides, and a legitimate night bite around the bridges and Boca Grande Pass to the south. Late-season rules of engagement matter more, not less, in 86°F water: heavy tackle, short fights, fish over 40” stay in the water — that’s state law and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust’s handling standard. The fishing itself is peak-summer good. Spawning fish are stacked in Big Sarasota Pass, New Pass, and Longboat Pass on the outgoing tides, walkers are sight-casting beach snook in a foot of water off Siesta and Casey Key at dawn, and the dock-light bite from Bird Key to Venice carries the nights. What’s the hottest bite in Sarasota this month?
Mangrove snapper. The summer spawn peaks between the July and August full moons, and fish have pulled off the docks and stacked on nearshore reefs and ledges — the Venice 1-Mile Reef, the limestone south of Venice Inlet in ~30 ft, and the M-series reefs (coordinates on the Sarasota County artificial reef page). Anchor up-current, run a chum slick, and downsize: 20–30 lb fluorocarbon, 1/0–3/0 circle hook, whitebait or shrimp with the hook buried. State waters: 10” minimum, 5 per person.
