Siesta Key Fishing

The biggest fishing story on this coast is at the south end of Siesta Key: Midnight Pass is open again. Closed since 1983, blown back open by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, the inlet is now a functioning tidal pass holding 11–17 feet of depth — and Sarasota County intends to keep it that way. Add Big Pass on the north end, the only natural rock formation on the beach at Point of Rocks, and a January-to-April pompano run, and Siesta Key is fishing better than it has in forty years.

Is Midnight Pass really open in 2026?

Yes. The 2024 hurricanes reopened the inlet naturally, and county surveys in late 2025 measured a sustained channel roughly 200 feet wide and 11–17 feet deep, moving real tidal volume between the Gulf and Little Sarasota Bay. In September 2025 Sarasota County formally stated its intent to keep the pass open, and it remains open per 2026 reporting.

What it means for fishing: Little Sarasota Bay — stagnant for four decades — has real tidal exchange again, and the new inlet concentrates bait and predators the way every young pass does. Snook and tarpon work the inlet’s tide lines, sharks patrol the bar, and the flats inside are coming back to life. How do you fish Big Pass from the Siesta side?

The north tip of Siesta fronts Big Sarasota Pass — the south bar and shell beach there give shore and wade anglers a genuine pass fishery. Snook cruise the bar edges all summer, tarpon string past the outside bar May through July (that game is covered from the boat side on our Lido Key and Sarasota pages), and the swash channels hold trout, ladyfish, and jacks on moving water. Same caution as the Lido side: Big Pass current is strong, and the bars shift after every storm. Fish the edges, not the channel.

Where is Point of Rocks and why does it matter?

Point of Rocks is the limestone outcrop at the south end of Crescent Beach — the only natural rock reef on Siesta’s beachfront. Rock means bait, and bait means predators: snook in the wash from May through September, mangrove snapper picking the ledges in summer, sheepshead in winter. It’s a wade-and-cast spot at dawn before the swim crowd arrives — small jigs, spoons, or a free-lined shrimp along the rock edges. The quartz-sand beach everyone flies in for runs shallow and clean north of it, which is exactly why the fish concentrate where the rock breaks the pattern.

What runs the Siesta beach in winter?

Pompano — January through April, the island’s most reliable cool-season fishery. The fish ride the troughs and bar cuts along Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach, eating sand fleas and small crustaceans kicked up in the wash. Small pink, yellow, or chartreuse pompano jigs bounced along the bottom cover it; so does a sand flea or shrimp on a light surf rig. Cold snaps push them out; three warm days bring them back. Spanish mackerel join in spring when the glass minnows arrive, and whiting fill in the slow days.

Turtle Beach is the island’s own ramp and the gateway to the south-end story: out the canal, into Little Sarasota Bay, and you’re minutes from the Jim Neville Marine Preserve and Midnight Pass. For kayaks, Turtle Beach is now a destination paddle, not just a convenience: launch, cross the short canal, thread the mangrove islands of the Jim Neville Marine Preserve, and fish your way to a working tidal inlet that didn’t exist three years ago. Where do you tie up to eat and refuel on Siesta Key?

Run in, tie off, and make it a day — the boat-up spots that ring the island:

• Ophelia’s on the Bay (9105 Midnight Pass Rd) — the white-tablecloth, sweeping-Intracoastal-view pick on the south end, right by the water you just fished.
• Spearfish Grille at Siesta Key Marina — a mean grouper sandwich steps from the docks.
• The Old Salty Dog — the laid-back, beer-battered-hot-dog joint; the City Island location is a short run north across Big Pass.

Snook harvest is seasonally closed on this coast for parts of the year and the rules get revisited — check current regulations at FWC and verify before you fish.

FAQ

Can you fish Midnight Pass from shore? The inlet cuts through the beach south of Turtle Beach — reachable on foot with a long walk or by kayak from the Turtle Beach launch. It is new, unstabilized water: currents are strong and the bars shift. Fish the edges and respect it.

Is there a fishing pier on Siesta Key? No. Siesta’s shore game is beach, rocks, and pass bars — Point of Rocks and the Big Pass shell beach are the two walk-up headliners.

What does the Turtle Beach ramp cost? Historically a small county launch fee (around $5). Confirm the current rate on the county parks site before you go.

Why was Midnight Pass closed for 40 years? It was artificially closed in 1983, and multiple permitting attempts to reopen it failed over the decades. The 2024 hurricanes did what the permits couldn’t — Sarasota Magazine tells the whole saga.
