July in Sarasota is the last month of the tarpon run, the peak of the mangrove snapper spawn, and the middle of the snook closure — with 86–88°F water compressing the whole bite into dawn, dusk, and dark. Fish 6–11 a.m. or after sunset, plan around afternoon thunderstorms, and the fishing is as good as any month on the calendar.
What’s biting in Sarasota in July?
Mangrove snapper are the hottest bite — the spawn peaks between the July and August full moons on nearshore reefs in 30–50 ft. Tarpon linger on the beaches and in the passes through mid-month, snook stack in the passes (catch-and-release only), and trout feed at dawn on the deep grass.
| Species | Rating | Where | Bait / lure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangrove snapper | Excellent | Nearshore reefs and ledges, 30–50 ft | Whitebait or shrimp, 1/0–3/0 circle hook |
| Tarpon | Good, fading | Beaches, passes, bridges at night | Threadfins, crabs on the hill tides |
| Snook (release only) | Excellent | Big Pass, New Pass, Longboat Pass, beaches, dock lights | Live whitebait; white paddletail for beach walkers |
| Spotted seatrout | Good | Deep grass 4–8 ft at dawn; dock lights at night | Shrimp under a popping cork |
| Redfish | Good | Mangrove shade lines, docks, potholes | Cut bait soaked on an edge |
| Red grouper | Good | Hard bottom 70–140 ft | Cut sardines, squid |
| Ladyfish, jacks | Excellent | Deep grass flats all morning | Spoons, jigs — the kids’ trip |

Are tarpon still around in July?
Yes, through roughly mid-month. The big May–June beach schools thin as spawned-out fish scatter, but singles and small pods still track the beaches off Longboat Key, Siesta Key, and Casey Key at first light, fish roll in the passes on the strong new- and full-moon tides, and a real night bite sets up around the bridges and Boca Grande Pass. The 10-week Suncoast Tarpon Roundup runs its final weeks in July — the season’s arc in one schedule.
Late-season handling matters more in hot water: heavy tackle, short fights, and fish over 40” stay in the water — state law. Tarpon are catch-and-release only statewide per FWC tarpon regulations. Full seasonal breakdown on our tarpon page.
Can you keep snook in Sarasota in July?
No. Harvest is closed May 1 – August 31 in the Sarasota Bay Region; the season reopens September 1 with a 28–33” slot, one fish per person, and a $10 permit — details on the FWC snook page and our snook season 2026 guide.
The catch-and-release fishing is peak-summer good. Spawning fish stack in Big Sarasota Pass, New Pass, and Longboat Pass on the outgoing tides; beach walkers sight-cast snook in a foot of water off Siesta and Casey Key at dawn; and the dock-light bite from Bird Key to Venice carries the nights. Use 40 lb leader in the passes, land fish fast, and keep them wet — summer release mortality is real. Technique notes in our catch-and-release guide and dock-light night fishing page.

Where is the mangrove snapper spawn happening?
On nearshore structure in 30–50 ft: the Venice 1-Mile Reef, the limestone ledges south of Venice Inlet in ~30 ft, and the M-series reefs off Sarasota — coordinates on the Sarasota County artificial reef page and in our artificial reef database. The spawn concentrates the biggest keeper fish of the year inside a short run.
The program: anchor up-current, start a chum slick, and downsize — 20–30 lb fluorocarbon, 1/0–3/0 circle hook, live whitebait or shrimp with the hook point buried. State waters rules: 10” minimum, 5 per person. Reef-fish trips require the free State Reef Fish Angler designation and a rigged descending device — see the FWC regulations guide.
Where can I fish from shore in Sarasota in July?
Work the edges of the day and shore fishing stays strong:
- Venice jetties — snook on the rocks at first light and after dark (release only), Spanish mackerel and ladyfish on the outgoing, mangrove snapper tight to the granite on cut shrimp. Full walkthrough in our Venice jetty guide.
- Venice Fishing Pier — Spanish mackerel and snapper early, sharks and ladyfish through the morning; no license needed on a licensed pier (venicefishingpier.com).
- Tony Saprito Pier and the Ringling bridges — night snook on the shadow lines, trout and snapper around the lights.
- Beach walking — dawn surf walkers sight-cast snook in a foot of water off Siesta and Casey Key; a white paddletail on a light jighead is the whole rig. See surf and shore fishing.
Shore anglers 16+ need a license (free shoreline registration for Florida residents) — our license guide covers every case.
