Mangrove snapper stay strong on the nearshore reefs, dock-light snook carry the nights, and the first fall king mackerel show nearshore late in the month. It’s also the final month of the snook closure: September 1 is circled twice.
What’s biting in Sarasota in August?
Mangrove snapper on the reefs and ledges, Spanish mackerel and blue runners over the deep grass, night snook on every lighted dock (release only through August 31), and redfish tucked under the mangrove canopy on the big summer high tides. Late month, the first fall kings arrive on the 30–90 ft reefs.

How do you beat the August heat?
Fish the first three hours of light and the last one, or fish after dark. Midday water on a shallow flat can push past 90°F and the bite flatlines; the same fish eat readily at 6 a.m. Watch the storm clock too: the seabreeze builds by early afternoon most days — check the Tampa Bay marine forecast before any Gulf run, and live water temps at NOAA St. Petersburg. August is also peak hurricane season — a week of forecast awareness beats a canceled trip.

Is night fishing good in Sarasota in August?
The best of the year. Every lighted dock from Bird Key to Venice holds snook, trout, and snapper after dark, and the bridge shadow lines — Ringling, Siesta Drive, Stickney Point — fish all night. Are mangrove snapper still biting in August?
Yes — the spawn runs between the July and August full moons, so early August is still peak. Reefs and ledges in 30–50 ft (numbers in our artificial reef database), chum slick, 20–30 lb fluorocarbon, circle hooks, whitebait.
