Lido Key Fishing

Lido Key is Sarasota’s downtown beach and the inside corner of two of the most productive passes on this coast — Big Sarasota Pass on the south end, New Pass on the north. From our home dock it’s a three-mile run. Tarpon roll Big Pass on outgoing tides in early summer, snook live on the New Pass rocks all year, and the mangrove tunnels of South Lido are the best-known kayak fishing lagoon in the county.

What makes Big Pass worth fishing?

Big Sarasota Pass is the main artery between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf — a wide, shifting channel with a huge sandbar complex on its south side and a hard channel edge that concentrates everything moving in or out of the bay.

The marquee bite is tarpon: May through July, fish stage in and off the pass and ride the outgoing tide along the channel edge. It’s a boat fishery — crabs or threadfins drifted ahead of rolling fish — and it demands courtesy; strings get poached and put down daily in June. The same channel edges produce pompano in late winter and Spanish mackerel whenever bait pours through, spring and fall.

The wading corner at South Lido Park deserves a straight warning: Big Pass current is genuinely strong. Fish the beach side of the bar on lower stages of tide, keep the drop-off in front of you, and stay out of the channel.

Where do snook hold on Lido Key?

New Pass — specifically the rocks lining the channel on both sides and the bridge between City Island and Longboat. Snook hold on that structure twelve months a year: night tides around the bridge shadow line in summer, deeper rock edges through winter. Shore anglers work the Ken Thompson Park side; boaters drift the rocks with whitebait chummed off the transom. The beach itself adds a surf-line snook walk from May through September — first light, a white jig or fly, fish in the first trough a rod-length off the sand. Where do you launch a boat or kayak for Lido Key?

There is no boat ramp on Lido Key itself. Ted Sperling Nature Park at 190 Taft Dr on the south end is a kayak launch only — no trailer lanes — so a trailered boat starts one island back at Ken Thompson Park on City Island, before the St. Armands bridge, or downtown at Centennial Park.

Ken Thompson Park on City Island is the natural choice — you idle out into New Pass and Lido’s whole perimeter is inside a ten-minute run. Centennial Park downtown works too, but note the City of Sarasota’s temporary lane reduction announced June 25, 2026 — expect weekend congestion until the Bay Park work wraps.

What are the Lido mangrove tunnels?

The south third of Lido is a county park wrapped around a mangrove lagoon system — Brushy Bayou and a network of paddle-width tunnels cut through the canopy. Ted Sperling Nature Park at 190 Taft Dr is the launch: rentals on site from permitted vendors, manatees and dolphins in the lagoon most days, and mangrove edges holding juvenile snook, mangrove snapper, and spotted seatrout on the deeper outside bends. It is the light-tackle kayak session to run when the Gulf is blown out — protected in any wind. Take the falling tide in, fish the mouths of the tunnels as the water drains, and let the incoming push you home.

What can you catch on Lido Beach?

The beach between the two passes is a seasonal conveyor:

No pier on Lido — it’s all open beach, which keeps it uncrowded by pier standards. A Florida saltwater shoreline license applies; current license rules and all size/bag limits are at FWC. Verify current rules before you fish.

The St. Armands flats — the grass inside the key, behind the circle — deserve their own line: 2–5 ft of turtle grass holding spotted seatrout most of the year and redfish on the higher stages of tide. They’re five minutes from Ken Thompson’s ramp lanes and get overlooked by everyone running to the passes, which is exactly why they hold fish.

Bait and tackle: New Pass Grill at the New Pass end of Ken Thompson Parkway has supplied this pass since 1929 with live bait and a burger grill. (Hart’s Landing across the causeway was demolished after the 2024 hurricanes; CB’s on Siesta Key and Economy Tackle on the Trail are the tackle alternates.)

Where do you tie up to eat and refuel near Lido Key?

New Pass Grill & Bait Shop sits right on New Pass between Lido and Longboat — burgers, cold drinks, and live shrimp without leaving the water, the classic mid-trip stop. Run north to City Island for The Old Salty Dog, or across Big Pass to the Marina Jack bayfront for fuel, slips, and a proper sit-down.

Can you fish Big Pass from shore? Yes, from the South Lido Park corner — but respect the current. Fish the bar edges on moderate tide stages and stay off the channel drop.

Is there a boat ramp on Lido Key itself? No. Ken Thompson Park on City Island (next island in the chain, before the St. Armands bridge) is effectively Lido’s ramp — six lanes into New Pass.

Are the mangrove tunnels fishable in wind? Yes — that’s their value. The canopy blocks nearly any wind direction, so when a 20-knot blow cancels the passes and beach, the lagoon still fishes.

When is the best fishing on Lido Key? May–July for tarpon and beach snook; January–April for pompano; April and October for mackerel. Something is biting every month.
