What Makes Lido Key Different.

Lido Key sits between two of the most productive passes on this coast — Big Sarasota Pass at the south end, New Pass at the north — and it is a three-mile run from the home dock. Short trip out, immediate structure, and two entirely different pieces of water within a few minutes of each other.

Two passes on one island. If one is not working on a given tide, the other usually is.

New Pass rocks hold snook all year and fish best on moving water with a live bait tight to the structure. Big Pass is the tarpon side: from May into early summer, tarpon roll through on the outgoing, and that is a dedicated trip rather than something you pick up in passing. The pass edges also hold pompano in the winter months on a jig.

South Lido's mangrove tunnels are the best-known kayak fishing lagoon in the county — protected, shallow, and full of juvenile snook and redfish. They fish when the wind makes everything else miserable, which is the practical reason to know them. Launch details are in the kayak launches guide.

There is no boat ramp on Lido itself; the Lido Key area guide covers access, and the boat-ramp directory covers the alternatives. Four-hour half days from $450 include licenses, rods and bait.
