Anna Maria Island sits where Tampa Bay meets the Gulf, which is exactly why it fishes so well — passes, beaches, grass flats, and nearshore reefs all within a few minutes of each other. A lot of it is walk-up, no-boat water. Here are the ten spots that produce, from the north tip to the reefs offshore. (Several island piers took hurricane damage in 2024 — check current status before you go; we note it below.)
1. Bean Point (north tip)
The northern point of the island, where the Gulf meets the mouth of Tampa Bay, is a wading and shore-fishing gem: snook and redfish cruise the sandbars, pompano work the trough in spring, and the deeper water off the point holds Spanish mackerel. Strong current — fish it on a moving tide.
2. Longboat Pass (south end)
The most reliable pass in the area, at the island’s south tip by Coquina Beach. Snook stage in the pass and the Coquina trench spring and summer, pompano work the shoreline March–May, and mackerel and flounder hold on the bridge pilings. Full pass detail in our passes and inlets guide.
3. Coquina Beach jetty & surf

4. The Bulkhead flat & reef
Off the north end on the Tampa Bay side, this big shallow flat is a spotted seatrout and mackerel classic, with the Bulkhead Reef in about 15 feet nearby. A live shrimp under a popping cork on a moving tide is all it takes.
5. Anna Maria Sound & Palma Sola flats
The protected grass flats between the island and Bradenton hold redfish, trout, and snook on the higher tides — prime kayak and wade water. Quiet mornings produce tailing reds on the shallow bars.
6. Bradenton Beach City Pier (Bridge Street Pier)
At the island’s south end, this is the best no-boat spot around: no license needed on the pier, bait shop, rod rentals, snook on the night shadow lines, and mackerel and jacks on the bait schools. City of Bradenton Beach pier info.
7. The 3-Mile and 7-Mile Reefs

8. Anna Maria City Pier (check status)
The historic bayfront pier at the north end was hurricane-damaged and closed for repairs, with reopening scheduled for fall 2026 — verify before you go. When open, it’s a mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and flounder spot over the bay grass.
9. Rod & Reel Pier site (rebuild pending)
A beloved north-end institution destroyed by Helene and Milton in 2024; a community fundraiser passed $104,000 toward a rebuild in 2026, but there’s no reopening date yet (Suncoast News update). The surrounding shoreline and grass still fish well from a kayak while the pier’s future is decided.
