Every NOAA tide station from Anna Maria to Boca Grande — 10 station IDs, real-time data at St. Petersburg 8726520, and how to fish each tide stage.

Sarasota-area tide predictions come from ten NOAA stations between Anna Maria Island and Charlotte Harbor, and the closest station to your spot is the one to use — Sarasota Bay (8726083), Cortez (8726217), Venice (8725858), or Port Boca Grande (8725577). Only one station on this coast reports real-time water level: St. Petersburg (8726520) in Tampa Bay. Everything else is a prediction, which means wind can and will move the actual water an hour or a foot off the table.

The full regional list lives on NOAA’s west-central Florida tide predictions index. Bookmark your two or three home stations; times shift meaningfully between them. A high at Anna Maria Outside on the open Gulf and a high inside Roberts Bay are not the same event.

What’s the difference between a real-time station and a prediction station?

A prediction station publishes a calculated astronomical tide — moon, sun, geometry. A real-time station has instruments in the water reporting what the level actually is, right now.

On this coast, St. Petersburg 8726520 is the only real-time water-level station, and it also anchors Tampa Bay PORTS — a network of live sensors reporting currents, water level, and winds at multiple points around the bay. Use it two ways:

  • Calibrate the predictions. If St. Pete is running 0.5 ft below its predicted level after two days of hard east wind, assume your Sarasota Bay flat is low too. Blown-out negative tides strand flats; blown-in water opens up mangrove shorelines that are normally dry.
  • Check real water temperature. The St. Petersburg physical oceanography page reports live bay temp — the number that decides whether snook are eating or sulking.

How do tides work on the Sarasota coast?

Three things set our tides apart from the postcard version:

  1. Mixed tides. The Gulf coast runs a mixed tide pattern — some days deliver two highs and two lows of unequal size, other days effectively one long high and one long low. Read the actual table each day; don’t assume the rhythm.
  2. Small range. Typical swings run roughly 1.5–2.5 ft. That sounds like nothing until you remember most of Sarasota Bay’s grass flats sit in 1–4 ft of water. A 2 ft swing drains or floods half the fishable bottom.
  3. Wind overrides the table. A sustained 15–20 kt wind moves more water than the moon here. Strong east wind empties the bays; strong onshore west wind stacks water in. This is why the real-time St. Pete gauge matters.

How do I read a tide chart for fishing?

The one rule: moving water beats slack water. Current pushes bait, and predators station themselves where the push concentrates it. The chart tells you when and where that happens.

Practical reads off the chart itself:

  • Steeper curve = stronger current. The fastest water runs mid-tide, between the high and low — not at either end. Plan pass fishing around the middle two hours of the swing.
  • Bigger range days fish harder. New and full moon tides move the most water. A spring outgoing through Big Pass in June is a tarpon appointment; a weak 0.8 ft neap swing barely gets the bait’s attention.
  • Negative lows are scouting gold. A minus tide exposes the bars, potholes, and troughs you’ll fish when the water comes back. Walk it, mark it, return on the flood.
  • Match stage to structure, not clock time. “The bite was 7–9 AM” really means “the bite was the last two hours of outgoing.” Chase the stage, and adjust as it shifts roughly 40–50 minutes later each day.

Where do I get actual current data, not just tide times?

Tide tables give you water height. Current — speed and direction of flow — is the thing fish actually respond to, and there are two free sources:

  • Tampa Bay PORTS reports live measured currents at sensors around Tampa Bay — the only measured-current data on this stretch of coast. Useful for the Skyway and lower-bay trips out of Anna Maria Island.
  • NOAA’s CO-OPS API (api.tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov) serves predictions and observations as raw data — the same feed this site and most tide apps are built on.

For everywhere without a sensor, infer it: current lags the tide table slightly in back bays, runs strongest through the narrowest cuts, and a pass mouth can still be dumping outbound water after the table says the tide turned. Trust your eyes on the crab-trap buoys over any table.
