The reefs are waypoints, not guarantees — the fish are wherever the bait is, and that moves daily. Run the migration line and read the water:
- Birds first. Diving terns and pelicans over open water beat any GPS number. Frigatebirds circling high usually mean something big is pushing bait up.
- Bait flicks. Threadfin and sardine schools dimpling the surface over 30–60 ft of hard bottom is the picture you are looking for. Set the spread up-current of the school, not through it.
- Temperature. 68° water is early; 70–72° lights the spring run. A one-degree break line is worth trolling twice.
- Skyrockets. Kings hit surface baits from below at full speed and clear the water. One skyrocket within sight is worth thirty minutes of your day — get baits there.
Depth-wise, run flat lines at the surface and stagger the downrigger bait: 15–20 ft down over the 40 ft reefs, 30–40 ft down when working 60–90 ft. On slow days the downrigger bait out-catches the flat lines three to one; the fish hold with the bait at mid-column and never show on top.
If the run has not arrived yet, the same trip converts cleanly: anchor a reef, chum for mangrove snapper, and keep one wire-rigged flat line soaking behind the boat. April doubles on snapper-plus-king are a Sarasota staple.

The 20-inch “Spanish” you are about to box might be an undersized king. Two checks:
- Lateral line: a king’s drops sharply below the second dorsal fin; a Spanish’s slopes gently.
- First dorsal fin: Spanish carry a black patch on the front of the fin; adult kings don’t. Juvenile kings have spots like Spanish — the lateral line is the tiebreaker.
