King Mackerel off Sarasota: Spring and Fall Runs on the Nearshore Reefs

King mackerel pass Sarasota twice a year, and both windows are worth planning around. The spring run peaks in April as Gulf water climbs through the low 70s and fish flood the nearshore reefs; the fall run peaks in late October, and it typically carries the bigger fish, with smokers over 30 pounds regularly caught within sight of the condos.

The fishery is bait over structure: kings track the threadfin, sardine, and blue runner schools that stack on hard bottom in 30–90 feet, which off Sarasota means the M-series artificial reefs 6–13 miles out from New Pass and Venice Inlet, the Silvertooth complex, and any bait flick you mark between them.

The local standard is slow-trolling live bait on stinger rigs: a blue runner or big threadfin bridled to the lead hook, a trailing number 4 treble pinned in its back, all on one to two feet of number 4 or 5 single-strand wire, because kings cut mono as a matter of course.

Stagger two flat lines behind the boat and run one bait deep on a downrigger. When live bait is scarce, planers pulling silver spoons at 5–7 knots cover water. Set drags light for the first run; a smoker's opening sprint can dump 150 yards before the spool slows.

Regulations for 2026: 24-inch fork-length minimum, three fish per person in the Gulf, open year-round; verify at MyFWC. A 4000–6000 spinning or 20-class conventional outfit with 300 yards of line is the practical minimum, and a rigged pitch bait should stay ready, because the biggest king of the season usually shows up as a free-swimmer behind the boat, uninvited.
