The hottest bottom bite of the Sarasota summer happens between the July and August full moons. Mangrove (gray) snapper pull off the docks and mangrove shorelines and stack on nearshore reefs and ledges in 30–50 ft to spawn.
The season is open year-round, the state minimum is 10 inches with a 5-fish bag, and the best of it sits one to five miles off the beach.

When do mangrove snapper spawn off Sarasota?
June through September is prime, and the summer full moons are the trigger — the heaviest concentrations show between the July and August full moons, in 30–50 ft of water. The fish that live under your dock light in May are on the Venice ledges in July; the offshore population is the trophy population. Florida Sport Fishing’s summer snapper guide covers the same pattern in detail.
| Season | Where the fish are | Size class |
|---|---|---|
| June–September (spawn) | Nearshore reefs and ledges, 30–50 ft | 2–6 lb, the occasional 8+ |
| Year-round | Deeper structure, 60–100+ ft, mixed with red grouper | Biggest averages |
| Year-round | Docks, bridges, mangrove shorelines, dock lights | 10–14” |
Night and low light are dramatically better for the big ones — the same fish that ignores everything at noon eats at dusk. Cooler months thin the reefs out but never empty them; December fish just hold deeper and want smaller baits on lighter leader.
Where do you catch mangrove snapper near Sarasota?
Every spot on the list below is the same thing under the boat: hard relief in a sand desert. Rock, ledge, wreck, piling, bridge rubble. Snapper sit inches off it and will not chase far, so the boat has to be positioned to feed the structure rather than sit on top of it.
Mangrove snapper hold hard against rock, ledge and oyster-crusted structure.
The short list of hard relief, north to south:
- Manatee County reefs — Three Mile North (30 ft) is a consistent snapper stack; numbers on the Manatee County reef GPS list.
- Sarasota County M-series (M-1 through M-4, ~40 ft, 6–8 miles off Big Pass) plus the Lynn Silvertooth and Walker reef complexes — see the Sarasota County reef GPS list.
- Venice 1-Mile Reef (~30 ft) and the scattered limestone ledges just south of Venice Inlet — the classic spawning-run targets.
- 60–100 ft structure for the biggest year-round fish, usually caught while grouper fishing.

How do you chum and rig for mangrove snapper?
Anchor up-current of the structure — not on top of it — and hang a chum bag. Mixing dry oats into the chum stretches the slick and keeps the fish drifting back to you. Then the cardinal rule: downsize until you get bit.
| Item | Spec |
|---|---|
| Leader | 20–30 lb fluorocarbon — drop to 20 when the bite slows |
| Hook | 1/0–3/0 non-offset circle hook, buried fully in the bait |
| Weight | Smallest that touches bottom; free-line into the slick for the biggest fish |
| Rig | Knocker rig tight to structure; free-lined bait in the chum for quality |
| Baits | Live scaled sardines (whitebait), live shrimp, small pinfish, fresh-cut threadfin |

Mangroves have excellent eyesight and are famously leader-shy — if the bite dies, drop leader class before you move the boat. Non-stainless circle hooks are required with natural bait for Gulf reef fish, and they must be non-offset in state waters; see FWC’s reef fish gear rules. Bait-catching and livewell craft are in our live bait guide, and the anchoring-on-structure fundamentals in bottom fishing.
What are the mangrove snapper limits in the Gulf for 2026?
The state/federal line — 9 nautical miles in the Gulf — changes both the size and bag limit:
| Rule | State waters (inside 9 nm) | Federal waters |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum size | 10” total length | 12” total length |
| Bag limit | 5 per person, within the 10-snapper aggregate | 10 per person, within the 10-snapper aggregate |
| Season | Open year-round | Open year-round |

The reef-fish gear requirements apply to every boat, not just the deep ones: a dehooking device, and a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready for use in state waters — on board and readily available in federal waters under the NOAA DESCEND Act bulletin. Spawn-depth fish from 30–50 ft usually swim off fine; the 60–100 ft fish need help getting back down. Private-boat anglers also carry the free State Reef Fish Angler designation from GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, renewed every year.
Can you catch mangrove snapper inshore in Sarasota?
All year, and it is the best light-tackle practice fishery in the bay. The inshore fish are the juveniles of the same population — 10 to 14 inches, holding anywhere with shade and current.
Residential docks, bridge fenders, seawalls, oyster edges, and mangrove shorelines from Anna Maria down through Little Sarasota Bay all hold them. The rules are the same as the reefs — 10-inch minimum, 5-fish bag in state waters — and so is the leader-shy attitude, just scaled down.

The inshore drill:
- Tackle: 2500–3000 spinning reel, 10–15 lb braid, 20 lb fluorocarbon leader, 1/0 circle hook or a 1/8–1/4 oz jighead.
- Baits: live shrimp is the everyday answer; a small live whitebait outsizes your average fish.
- Tide: moving water, either direction. Slack tide shuts the docks off.
- Night: dock lights are the premium inshore window — the snapper sit on the dark edge of the light pool and dart in. Cast past the light, work the bait through the edge.
Treat every inshore mangrove trip as scouting for June: the docks that hold the most 12-inchers in spring feed the closest reefs in summer.
How big do mangrove snapper get?
Inshore fish run 10–14 inches. On the spawning reefs 2–6 lb is standard and an 8–10 lb fish shows every season, almost always at night or first light. The Florida record is 17 lb even, caught off Port Canaveral in 1992 (Florida saltwater records).
ID check: gray-bronze to copper-red, juveniles with a dark stripe from snout through the eye, and visible canine teeth — smaller canines than the look-alike dog snapper.

FAQ
What is the mangrove snapper limit in Florida Gulf state waters? 5 per person per day, 10-inch minimum total length, inside the 10-snapper aggregate. Federal waters: 10 fish, 12-inch minimum.

The summer snapper reefs sit on the way to deeper bottom — most crews add a red grouper drift in 70+ ft, and by September the gag grouper season overlaps the tail of the spawn. Fall king mackerel show over the same reefs by October.
