Mangrove Snapper in Venice: The One-Mile Reef, the V-Reefs, and the Full Moon Spawn

Venice mangrove snapper fishing: summer spawn loads the 1-Mile Reef, V-reefs and 30-foot ledges between July and August full moons. Chum, rigs, and rules.

Venice has the most accessible quality snapper bottom on this coast. The V-reefs, limestone boulder piles in about 17 feet less than a mile off Venice Inlet, the Venice Reef and I4 site a couple of miles out in the low 20s, and the scattered natural limestone ledges south of the inlet in about 30 feet all load with mangrove snapper in summer — short runs even for a modest boat, all on the artificial-reefs reference.

The event is the spawn: between the July and August full moons, mature fish pour off the inshore structure and stack on this hard bottom, and for those weeks the Venice ledges produce 2- to 6-pound mangroves as reliably as anywhere in the region.

The method is chum and finesse. Anchor up-current, hang a chum bag, stretch the slick with a handful of oats, and fish 20–30 lb fluorocarbon with a 1/0 to 3/0 non-offset circle hook buried completely in a live sardine, shrimp, or fresh-cut threadfin — using the smallest weight that gets down, or none at all.

Snapper are leader-shy with sharp eyes; when the bite fades, go lighter before you go elsewhere — the bottom-fishing guide covers the presentation. Shore anglers are not shut out, because the inlet jetties and the Venice Fishing Pier hold 10- to 14-inch fish all summer, best after dark around the lights (see the piers-and-bridges guide).

Gulf rules for 2026 here: 10-inch minimum and five fish within the 10-snapper aggregate in state waters, 12-inch minimum federal; reef fishing from a private boat requires the free State Reef Fish Angler designation and a descending device rigged and ready. Verify at MyFWC. Circle hooks are required with natural bait on reef fish here, and they out-hook J hooks on snapper anyway.
