Sarasota holds flounder all year, but the fishery peaks in fall: September through mid-October, fish slide out of the bay toward the passes ahead of their offshore winter spawn, stacking on dock edges, pass sand, and jetty rock. The 2026 rules are a 14-inch minimum, five fish per day, and a statewide recreational closure every October 15 – November 30 — which sits squarely on the back half of the run, so know the date before you keep one. On the fillet table they’re as good as anything that swims in the bay.
How do I know the fish I caught is a flounder?
A flounder is unmistakable in shape — flat, both eyes on one side, camouflage-brown — but which flounder matters less than people think, since the rules cover all of them:
| Feature | What you’ll see in Sarasota |
|---|---|
| Eyes | Both on the LEFT side (lay the fish with the tail toward you, eyes up — the head points right) |
| Color | Mottled brown to gray, instantly changing to match sand or mud; belly side white |
| Spots | Gulf flounder — the common local fish — shows three dark ocellated (eye-ringed) spots arranged in a triangle mid-body |
| Southern flounder | Larger, no distinct three-spot triangle; less common here than on Panhandle mud |
| Mouth | Surprisingly large, toothy — built to ambush whole fish |
The three-spot triangle answers most “what flatfish did I catch in Florida” questions: Gulf flounder. Bigger, spotless fish are usually southern flounder — the species behind the roughly 20 lb 9 oz world-record fish taken in Florida waters in 1983 (state records). Anything over 18 inches in Sarasota is a local “doormat.”

When is flounder season in Sarasota?
| Month | Pattern |
|---|---|
| Jan–Feb | Scattered fish inside; sand potholes on warm afternoons |
| Mar–Apr | Fish return from the offshore spawn — strong spring bite on pass edges and nearshore reefs |
| May–Aug | Steady residents on docks, sand-grass edges, and creek mouths; a bycatch fish that rewards anyone who slows down |
| Sep–Oct 14 | The run. Fish stage toward Big Pass, New Pass, Longboat Pass, and the Venice jetties. Best keeper window of the year |
| Oct 15–Nov 30 | Closed to harvest statewide — catch-and-release only, right through the thick of the migration |
| Dec | Reopens Dec 1; late movers around the passes and nearshore structure |
The closure exists precisely because the fall migration made flounder easy to overharvest; FWC tightened the rules in 2021 (14” minimum, 5-fish bag, six-week closure) to rebuild the stock. Full text on the FWC flounder page.
The fall run stages flounder on pass sand from September into mid-October.
Where do you catch flounder in Sarasota?
Flounder are ambush predators that lie half-buried on clean sand next to current and structure:
- Pass edges — the sand shoulders of Big Sarasota Pass, New Pass, and Longboat Pass, especially where sand meets grass or rock.
- The Venice jetties — the sand pockets tight to the rocks are the best land-based flounder spot in the county; access notes in our Venice jetty guide.
- Dock and seawall edges — residential docks from Bird Key to Nokomis, wherever tide sweeps bait along a sand strip.
- Creek and canal mouths — Phillippi Creek, Bowlees Creek, Hudson Bayou on outgoing tides.
- Nearshore hard bottom and artificial reefs in 20–40 ft, spring and early winter — coordinates in our artificial reef database.
- Sand potholes on the flats — every white hole in the grass is a candidate on a wade-fishing tide.

Sand on its own is not the target — the seam is. Bare bottom next to grass, rock, or a piling is where current pushes shrimp, small crabs, and glass minnows, and a buried flounder only has to come off the bottom once to eat. Fish the edge of the white rather than the middle of it, and work the down-current side of anything that breaks the tide.
Sand pockets against the Venice jetty rocks hold the county's best shore flounder.
What’s the best rig and bait for flounder?
Slow and on the bottom wins — a flounder will not chase up in the water column.
| Offering | How to fish it |
|---|---|
| Live bull minnow (mud minnow) on a 1/4 oz jighead | The classic — dragged, not hopped, across sand |
| Live shrimp or small pilchard on a knocker rig | Deadly around dock edges and jetty rock |
| Finger mullet, 3–4” | Doormat bait during the fall run |
| Soft-plastic paddletail or shrimp on 1/4–3/8 oz jighead | Slow-drag with occasional twitches; white and chartreuse standard |
| Berkley Gulp! shrimp | The one scented plastic locals treat as bait |
The bite is a distinctive double thump-and-weight: flounder grab bait crosswise, then turn it. Count two or three seconds before setting on natural bait. Tackle: 7’ medium spinning, 3000 reel, 10–15 lb braid, 20–25 lb fluoro. Our jigging and bottom-fishing primers cover the retrieve. Gigging flounder at night on shallow sand is also legal here — but not during the Oct 15–Nov 30 closure, when harvest by any gear stops.

Are flounder good to eat?
Top tier — with pompano and spotted seatrout, flounder round out the best-eating shortlist of Sarasota inshore fish. The fillets are white, mild, thin, and delicate; a 14–16” fish yields four small boneless fillets (two per side). Sauté or broil with butter and lemon, 2–3 minutes a side, or bake a doormat whole and stuffed. Ice fish immediately and eat them fresh — flounder doesn’t hold in the freezer like firmer fish. If you’d rather hand the work to a professional, see our eat your catch guide for local restaurants that cook your fillets.

What is the flat fish with three spots I caught in Florida? A Gulf flounder — three ocellated spots in a triangle mark the species. Larger spotless fish are southern flounder. Same regulations either way.
Where is the best flounder fishing near Sarasota? The Venice jetties and the sand edges of Big Pass, New Pass, and Longboat Pass, September through mid-October, plus dock edges bay-wide all summer.
Can you gig flounder in Sarasota? Yes — gigs and spears are legal gear for flounder in Florida, except during the Oct 15 – Nov 30 closure. Same 14”/5-fish limits apply.
Do you need a boat to catch flounder here? No. Jetties, piers, seawalls, and wadeable sand potholes produce plenty; a slow-dragged jig from shore covers ideal water.
