Bottom Fishing for Mangrove Snapper off Sarasota, FL
Bottom fishing mangrove snapper off Sarasota: the July-August spawn stacks fish on 30-50 ft reefs. Chum heavy, drop to 20 lb fluoro, small circle hooks.
How It Comes Together.
The hottest bottom bite of the Sarasota summer is the mangrove snapper spawn. Between the July and August full moons, the same fish that live under dock lights all year pull off inshore structure and stack on nearshore reefs and limestone ledges in 30-50 feet — the Venice 1-Mile Reef and the ledges south of Venice Inlet in about 30 feet are the reference spots, with the M-series reefs holding bigger fish year-round. The artificial-reef list has the coordinates, all within reach of a 20-foot bay boat on a calm morning.
The program is anchor-and-chum: set up up-current of the structure — not on top of it — deploy a frozen chum block, and add oats to extend the slick. Then rig light, because mangroves have excellent eyesight and no species punishes heavy leader faster: 20-30 lb fluorocarbon, a 1/0-3/0 non-offset circle hook fully buried in the bait, and the smallest knocker lead that reaches bottom. The biggest fish eat a bait free-lined weightless down the slick. Baits: live scaled sardines, live shrimp, small pinfish, fresh-cut threadfin.
The governing rule is the downsize rule — when the bite dies, drop leader class and hook size before you move the boat. Low light is a genuine edge; dawn and night trips produce the 5 lb-plus fish.
Regulations split at the 9-nautical-mile line: Gulf state waters run a 10-inch minimum and five per person inside the 10-snapper aggregate; federal waters run a 12-inch minimum. Circle hooks with natural bait, the free State Reef Fish Angler designation, and a descending device are all required for reef fishing from a private boat — verify at the FWC snappers page and the FWC regulations guide. Superb table fish; ice the box early, and note red grouper share the same bottom.
