Trolling for King Mackerel off Sarasota, FL

King mackerel pass Sarasota twice a year, and both windows are short enough to plan around. The spring run peaks in April as Gulf water climbs through the low 70s and fish flood the nearshore reefs; the fall run peaks in late October and often carries the bigger fish. December through February they are mostly gone south. The local standard is slow-trolling live bait, and the bait matters: a blue runner is the prime offering, with big threadfins and sardines close behind.

Rig every bait on a stinger — one to two feet of #4 single-strand wire, a lead hook through the nose and a trailing #4 treble swinging free near the tail — because kings cut mono on the first strike and routinely slash the back half of a bait.

Wire is non-negotiable. Pull baits at 1.5-3 knots: staggered flat lines behind the boat plus one on a downrigger or planer at mid-depth, worked over hard bottom in 30-60 feet.

The county's nearshore reef series and any bait flick on the sounder are the spots. When live bait is scarce, a #1 planer towing a silver Drone or Clarkspoon covers water until you find fish. Tackle: 7-foot medium-heavy conventional outfits, 20-30 size reels, 20-30 lb line, and a light initial drag — a genuine smoker's first run can dump 150+ yards in seconds. Average Sarasota kings run 10-30 lb; fish over 40 show every fall around the deeper wrecks. Handle every fish like the razor blade it is — long pliers, fingers clear of the net.
