Running offshore from Siesta Key starts with a pass choice. Big Pass on the north end is the deep, established route to the Gulf. Midnight Pass at the south end reopened in 2024 and now carries 11–17 feet, which shortens the run for anyone staying mid-island. Either way you clear the beach fast and the bottom starts working for you.

The shelf out here slopes gently — roughly 60 feet at ten miles, and 100+ means a 25–30 mile run. Depth is a fuel decision, not a distance one.

The near tier of reefs and hard bottom holds mangrove snapper and red grouper on structure, worked with the bottom fishing programme — heavy enough to turn a fish before it reaches the rock, light enough to get bit. Further out, ledges and wrecks put gag grouper and amberjack in play, and a flat-line bait or a trolled plug picks up king mackerel on the way.

Federal and state reef-fish seasons open and close on their own schedule and have been short in recent years — check the grouper season page and the FWC reef fish rules before you plan around keeping anything, and carry a descending device.
