Gag Grouper off Venice: Ledges, the M-Reefs, and a Short Season Done Right

Venice is a grouper port with geography on its side: the inlet is the most reliable in Sarasota County, and the reef line steps out from it in fishable increments — the V-reefs in 17 feet, the Venice Reef and I4 in the low 20s, natural limestone ledges in 30 feet a short run south, then M15 and M16 in 38–49 feet, and M9 through M11 in 61–70 feet within state-waters reach on a good day. Gags use it seasonally. In the cool months, November through March, fish move shallow onto the 20- to 40-foot hard bottom, and the classic technique is slow-trolling big lipped plugs, Stretch 25s and 30s, along the ledges; it is closed season then, so keep a descending device rigged as required and release everything fast under the catch-and-release best practices.

The harvest window under the current framework is September, when keepers hold on structure in 40–120 feet, and the M-reefs off Venice put legitimate fish inside a modest run.

The bottom game is uncompromising: anchor or spot-lock up-current, drop a live pinfish or grunt on a knocker rig with 60–100 lb braid and 80 lb fluorocarbon, and win the first 20 feet or lose the fish in the rock. Non-offset circle hooks are required with natural bait, and every reef angler on a private boat needs the free State Reef Fish Angler designation.
