Bottom Fishing for Red Grouper off Sarasota, FL
Bottom fishing red grouper off Sarasota: Swiss-cheese limestone in 70-140 ft, knocker rigs with cut sardines, 20-inch minimum and descending-device rules.
How It Comes Together.
Red grouper are the beginner-friendly grouper off Sarasota — they eat dead bait readily and fight honestly, without the surgical rock-extraction of a gag — but finding them means unlearning one habit: stop looking for ledges. Reds live on flat hard bottom, the potholed 'Swiss cheese' limestone that looks featureless up top and marks hard on the sounder. Short fish show 5-10 miles out, but consistent 20-inch-plus keepers live in 70-140 feet, roughly 15-35 miles off the beach — a real offshore trip with real weather judgment attached, so check the wind tools twice.
The productive method is a numbers game: drift the live-bottom expanses rather than anchoring one mark, and when a good fish comes over the rail, throw a marker buoy and work that area — solution holes hold multiple fish. The artificial-reef list gives starting numbers.
The rig is the knocker: a 4-12 oz egg sinker riding directly on 60-80 lb fluorocarbon to a 5/0-8/0 non-offset circle hook, dropped on 50-65 lb braid from a stout 6'6"-7 foot conventional outfit. Baits are unglamorous and effective — cut threadfin, sardines, squid, octopus — with a live pinfish reserved for upgrading the box.
Drop to bottom, crank two turns, and when the rod loads, reel. The first ten feet of the fight decides whether the fish reaches the rocks.
The rules stack up: 20-inch minimum, two per person inside the four-grouper aggregate, open year-round in Gulf state waters, but federal waters beyond 20 fathoms close February 1 through March 31. Every private-boat angler needs the free State Reef Fish Angler designation, non-offset circle hooks are required with natural bait, and a descending device must be rigged and ready. Verify on the FWC grouper page, the 2026 grouper season update, and the FWC regulations guide.
