Fly Fishing for Snook in Sarasota, FL

Sarasota gives the fly angler two distinct snook games, and they run on opposite clocks. The summer beach fishery, June through September, is the most visual snook fishing in Florida: fish cruise the sand in inches of clear water along Siesta, Lido, and Casey Key, backlit against white bottom with the sun overhead. Walk the dry sand, cast parallel to the beach — not out to sea — and lead each fish by a few feet.

Gear is light: a 7 or 8 wt with a floating line, a 12-foot leader tapered to 20 lb tippet, and small white flies, #2-#4 — Clousers, DT Specials, and the locally tied Grassett Snook Minnow. Heavier tippet costs you eats in that clean water. The night game on the lighted ICW docks from Sarasota to Venice — locals call it Snook Alley — is the most beginner-friendly saltwater fly fishing on this coast.

Set up up-current and outside the light halo, swing glass-minnow patterns through the shadow edge rather than the bright center, and strip-strike when the line ticks. Shorten the leader to 6-7 feet and bump tippet to 20-30 lb around pilings; the dock-light approach is the same on fly. One boat per light, trolling motor only, voices down — the fishery survives on manners.
