Cobia off Sarasota: Ray Riders, Marker Fish, and the Ready Rod

Cobia fishing off Sarasota is a discipline of readiness. The fish show up without appointment — a brown shape behind the boat, a shadow riding a ray down the beach, a pair circling a channel marker — and the anglers who catch them keep a rigged rod standing by: a 5000–8000 spinning outfit, 30–50 lb braid, 50–60 lb fluorocarbon, and a 2–3 oz chartreuse bucktail or a live bait ready to pitch.

The season peaks April through May as the spring migration moves up the coast, with fish around all summer and a fall push in October. Three patterns cover the local water. First, ray riders: spring through summer, cruise the beaches in 6–20 feet watching for the dark discs of cownose and eagle ray schools, because cobia shadow them, and a bait dropped ahead of the ray gets eaten.

It is the same water and the same looking game as tarpon season, so run both at once.

Second, structure: the channel markers of Sarasota Bay and the ICW, and the M-series artificial reefs 6–13 miles out in 40–60 feet; approach markers up-current and pitch to the shadow side before the boat gets close. Third, chum: anchored up-current of a reef with a block overboard, cobia rise in the slick behind the snapper.

Regulations for 2026 are strict and worth knowing cold: 36-inch fork-length minimum, one fish per person, maximum two per vessel; verify at MyFWC. Measure carefully and subdue a keeper completely before it comes over the rail, because a green cobia breaks gear and shins with equal enthusiasm. The white, firm meat is as good as anything that swims here.
