Red grouper are the honest workhorse of Sarasota's offshore fishery — open year-round in state waters and willing to eat a dead bait — but they make you drive. The bottom off Sarasota slopes gently, roughly 60 feet at ten miles, so consistent keeper fishing in 70–140 feet means a 15- to 35-mile run.
