Redfish at Bokeelia and Pine Island Sound: The Year-Round Signature Fishery

Bokeelia and Pine Island Sound redfish: turtle-grass flats, oyster bars and mangrove keys hold reds all 12 months. Spots, tides, tactics, and slot rules.

Redfish are the signature species of Pine Island Sound, and Bokeelia at the island's north tip is the front door to one of the most intact flats systems left in Florida. Long turtle-grass flats, oyster bars, and undeveloped mangrove keys run from Charlotte Harbor's south edge down past Useppa Island and Cabbage Key, and the reds live here all twelve months — slot fish on the grass and bars, bigger schooling fish staging near Captiva Pass and the harbor edge in fall.

The classic sound pattern is tide-driven. On low water, fish pothole edges, bar drop-offs, and the outside of oyster bars, sight-casting to tails and pushed wakes in the cool months when negative lows and clear water line up. On the flood, follow the fish to the mangrove roots of the keys — Patricio, Two Pines, and the shorelines around Jug Creek Shoal — and pitch live sardines, cut mullet, or a weedless gold spoon tight to the bushes.

Scent beats sight for reds; a chunk of ladyfish soaked on a pothole edge out-fishes a perfect artificial presentation more days than not.

Approach quietly, pole or drift the final stretch, and cast to the edges of schools. Launch options at the north end: the Bokeelia pier ramp, Pineland Marina for the best mid-sound access, or D and D Matlacha Bait and Tackle's ramp on the Matlacha Pass side, which also sells live shrimp, pinfish, and chum (see the boat-ramp directory).

This is the FWC's Southwest region; verify the current slot and bag at MyFWC before harvest, and expect the familiar 18–27-inch slot with a one-fish bag and tight vessel limit. The fishery has stayed great because pressure here still means poling, not running.
