Redfish in Charlotte Harbor: Bull Bay, Pirate Harbor, and the Winter Schools

Charlotte Harbor is the redfish estuary of Southwest Florida. Two hundred seventy square miles of open water, mangrove shoreline, and preserve-protected flats hold slot fish year-round and something better in the cool months: genuine schooling season.

From November through February, big pods gather on the shallow flats, with Pirate Harbor on the east side the best-known winter schooling area and Bull Bay and Turtle Bay on the west wall the big-fish country, boat-only water where 50- to 200-fish schools push wakes across copper-colored flats. Winter's negative low tides make it a sight fishery: fish the pothole edges and exposed bars, watch for tailing fish and nervous water, and lead the school's edge, never its middle.

A weedless gold spoon is the traditional search bait; cut ladyfish or mullet soaked on a pothole edge is the percentage play, because reds feed with their nose more than their eyes.

Approach matters more than tackle here. These fish spook at trolling-motor wash in clear winter water, so push-pole or drift the last hundred yards and make long casts. Warm months, the pattern flips to the mangroves: flood tides push fish under the bushes at Cape Haze, and live sardines or cut bait against the roots gets them out.
