Redfish in Sarasota Bay: Long Bar, the Bulkhead, and Negative Low Tides

Sarasota Bay redfish fishing: winter sight-casting on negative lows at Long Bar and the Bulkhead, fall schooling season, gold spoons, and 2026 slot rules.

Sarasota Bay redfish live on a handful of named flats, and learning them is most of the battle. Long Bar Pointe stretches nearly across the upper bay from the east shore, and reds school on its south side on low incoming tides. The Bulkhead, the big shallow flat off north Anna Maria at the mouth of Tampa Bay, and the grass of Palma Sola Bay round out the classic winter trio.

December through February is the technical prime: spring negative low tides drain the flats at dawn, winter water runs clear, and sight-fishing is as good as it gets on this coast. Fish pothole edges and exposed bars, watch for tails and pushed water, and slow-roll a weedless gold spoon or soak a chunk of cut ladyfish ahead of a working school.

September through November is the volume season, when over-slot schools stage around the passes and bars — Long Bar, the Bulkhead, and the Beer Can Island area — in pods of 50 fish and more.

Summer fish tuck under mangrove shade and residential docks on Bird Key and Siesta Key through the midday heat, where a live sardine or shrimp skipped under the overhangs earns the bite. Approach decides everything: no outboard on the flat, trolling motor on low or push-pole, long casts to the edge of the school. Tackle is light — a 3000 reel, 10–15 lb braid, 20–25 lb fluorocarbon.

The 2026 Sarasota Bay rules here: 18–27-inch slot, one fish per person, two per vessel, open year-round, no multiple hooks with natural bait. Verify at MyFWC before you keep one; many local guides still practice catch-and-release on every red as a matter of habit.
