Sheepshead in Bradenton: Cortez Bridge, the River Piers, and Winter Structure

Bradenton is quietly one of the better sheepshead towns on the coast, because it has what sheepshead need: old barnacle-crusted structure in every direction. The winter fishery runs December through April, peaking with the February and March spawn, and the landmark spots are all public.

The Cortez Bridge fenders hold fish all season for boaters, the historic Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach puts pier anglers over the same water with a bait shop and rod rentals on site, and the Green Bridge Fishing Pier in Palmetto stretches 2,000 feet over the Manatee River with fish-cleaning tables and no boat required — all in the piers-and-bridges guide. Technique beats location once you are on structure. Fish a number 1 or 2 short-shank hook, 20–25 lb fluorocarbon, the smallest weight that holds bottom, and a fiddler crab or thumbnail chunk of shrimp presented vertically, tight against the piling.
