Sheepshead in Sarasota: Bridge Fenders, Bay Reefs, and the Winter Bite

Sarasota sheepshead fishing December-April: Ringling and Stickney Point bridge fenders, Tony Saprito Pier, bay reefs, fiddler crab rigs, and 2026 limits.

When snook season closes in December and the trout slow down, Sarasota anglers who keep catching are usually on sheepshead. The winter program runs December through April, peaking in February and March when the spawn stacks the biggest fish on structure.

The bay is full of the right real estate: the bridge fenders at the Ringling Causeway, Siesta Drive, and Stickney Point, the channel markers along the ICW, residential dock pilings from Longboat to Roberts Bay, and the county's artificial reefs in 7–12 feet, including the O.D. Miller reef off City Island. Shore anglers do genuine business at Tony Saprito Pier on the causeway, with Hart's Landing selling shrimp and fiddlers a few steps away since 1934 (see the piers-and-bridges guide).

The technique is precise or it is nothing. Rig a number 1 or 2 short-shank hook on 20–25 lb fluorocarbon with the least weight that holds bottom, bait with a fiddler crab or a thumbnail piece of shrimp, and drop it vertically, six inches from the piling.

Sheepshead eat barnacles off the structure; a bait three feet away might as well be in another county — the bottom-fishing guide covers the vertical game. Scrape pilings to start a chum bite. The take is subtle, a tick and a heaviness; reel tight and lift smoothly. Slack and slow tides fish better here than ripping current, part of why sheepshead fill the dead spots in a winter day.

For 2026: 12-inch minimum, eight per person, 50 per vessel during March and April, open year-round; confirm at MyFWC. They are excellent eating and tedious to clean, so a good fillet knife and modest expectations of yield complete the kit.
