Sheepshead at the Venice Jetty: The February-March Spawn and How to Actually Hook One
Venice jetty sheepshead fishing peaks February-March when spawners pile onto the rocks. Fiddler crabs, light rigs, tide timing, and 2026 size and bag rules.
The Venice jetties are the premier land-based sheepshead spot in the region, and late winter is their moment. From roughly December the convict fish gather on the rocks, and in February and March the offshore spawning run piles 4- to 8-pound fish onto the jetties, the pass rock, and the nearshore hard bottom — the biggest sheepshead of the year within a short cast of a parking lot. The Venice jetty guide has the layout.
The south-jetty hole has long been the classic winter spot, though with the South Jetty walkway at Humphris Park closed for hurricane repairs, the North Jetty at Nokomis — with parking, restrooms, and the North Jetty Fish Camp selling bait — is the working platform; check City of Venice status before you go.
Rigging is where most anglers lose this game. Go small and stout: a number 1 or 2 short-shank hook, the smallest split shot or a quarter- to half-ounce knocker rig that holds bottom, 15 lb braid, and 20–25 lb fluorocarbon against the barnacled rock.
Fiddler crabs are the premium bait, with thumbnail-size shrimp pieces, sand fleas, and oysters close behind — the bottom-fishing guide covers presentation. Fish vertically, tight to the rocks, six inches off the structure rather than six feet. The bite is a tick, a slack line, a sudden heaviness; reel tight and lift rather than swinging hard. Slack to slow-moving tide actually helps, making the vertical presentation manageable, and scraping a few barnacles off the rocks starts a chum line.
Regulations for 2026 here: 12-inch minimum, eight fish per person, open year-round, with a 50-fish vessel limit during March and April; verify at MyFWC. Bring twice the hooks you think you need.
