Snook Fishing in Punta Gorda: River Mouths, Dock Lights, and the Winter Refuge

Punta Gorda snook fishing year-round: Peace River mouth on falling tides, US 41 and I-75 bridge lights at night, Fishermen's Village docks, winter holes.

Punta Gorda gives you snook fishing with a rhythm most of the coast does not have: instead of beach spawners, the game here is rivers. The Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor at the city's front door, and snook work the river mouth along the Ponce de Leon Park to Hog Island line on falling tides essentially year-round.

Bait flushes out of the creeks and canals with the dropping water, and the fish position on points, bars, and dock lines to intercept it. At night, the fishery moves to the lights: the US 41 twin-bridge shadow lines, the I-75 bridge clearance-marker lights upriver, and the dock lights around Fishermen's Village all hold feeding snook after dark. Work a DOA shrimp, small white paddletail, or free-lined live shrimp along the shadow edge, up-current side first — the full method is in our dock-light night-fishing guide.

Winter is when Punta Gorda separates itself. Harbor fish push miles up the Peace and Myakka into deeper, warmer, tannin-stained water, and the stretch above the 41 bridges gets a fraction of the coast's pressure.

Slow presentations on warm afternoons — soft plastics crawled on quarter-ounce jigheads — produce the biggest fish of the year; the rivers-and-backcountry reference covers this water. Launch at Laishley Park's municipal ramp, 46 trailer spots on the river, or Ponce de Leon Park for the harbor side (see the boat-ramp directory).

This water is in the FWC's Charlotte Harbor region, so verify current dates and slot in the snook-season guide and at MyFWC before harvest; the snook stamp and one-fish bag apply statewide. Bring 30–40 lb fluorocarbon and check it often — between oyster bars, dock pilings, and bridge fenders, everything a Punta Gorda snook does is an attempt to cut you off.
