Snook Fishing in Sarasota: Dock Lights, Bridge Shadows, and the Pass Spawn

Sarasota is a snook town, and the fishery runs on a clean annual clock. From May through August the fish stack in Big Sarasota Pass, New Pass, and along the beaches to spawn — closed season, release only. September 1 the season opens and fish spread back through the bay to mangrove edges, dock lights, and bridge shadow lines; October is arguably the best keeper-slot month of the year. December through February they winter far up Phillippi Creek, Hudson Bayou, and Whitaker Bayou, and March reopens harvest as fish slide out with 70-degree water.

The night game is the signature Sarasota program: green dock lights on Bird Key and the bayfront concentrate glass minnows and shrimp, and snook stack on the up-current shadow edge. Same story on the shadow lines under the Ringling Causeway, Siesta Drive, and Stickney Point bridges.

Work a DOA shrimp or small white jig from dark water into the light line, not the other way around.

Daytime, the standard is live scaled sardines, cast-netted early on the Radio Tower flats and chummed by the handful to fire the school against mangrove shorelines. Tackle: 7–7.5-foot medium-heavy spinning, a 3000–4000 reel, 15–20 lb braid, and never less than 30 lb fluorocarbon, because snook rasp through anything lighter.

In the Sarasota Bay region the 2026 rules are a 28–33-inch slot, one fish per person, open March 1–April 30 and September 1–November 30, snook stamp required.
