Snook Fishing at the Venice Jetties: Tides, Timing, and the Best Shore Access in the County

The Venice jetties are the best land-based snook access between Sarasota and Boca Grande, period. Live bait is the straightforward play: a scaled sardine, pinfish, or big shrimp free-lined into the current seam where the tide sweeps past the rocks. The old-school night program is a white flair hawk or bucktail jig swum slow and deep along the rocks on the outgoing, and it accounts for the biggest fish every summer.

Fish 40–60 lb fluorocarbon here, heavier than the open bay, because every hooked fish immediately tries to cut you off on barnacled granite — a 5000-class reel with the drag tightened is not overkill.

Two practical notes. First, the South Jetty walkway at Humphris Park has been closed for hurricane repairs with no announced reopening date, so check the City of Venice website; the North Jetty at Nokomis, with parking, restrooms, and the North Jetty Fish Camp selling bait right at the rocks, is fully open. Second, the FWC snook regions split near this inlet, so the season dates depend on exactly where you fish.
