Spanish Mackerel off Longboat Key: The Beach Run in April and October

Longboat Key Spanish mackerel: the April and October beach runs push bait down 12 miles of coast. Longboat Pass, New Pass, spoons, birds, and 2026 rules.

Longboat Key's twelve miles of beach sit squarely on the Spanish mackerel highway, and twice a year — April and October at the peaks — the run comes down this coast within casting range of the sand.

The visual cues do the scouting: terns and gulls diving on showered glass minnows, dark nervous water moving along the outer bar, and the occasional mackerel greyhounding through bait. Beach casters throw half-ounce silver spoons and Gotcha plugs past the activity and burn them back; the retrieve cannot realistically be too fast.

The passes at both ends of the key multiply the opportunity. Longboat Pass runs current at better than a knot and a half, and on the outgoing tide bait flushes out to mackerel stacked in the tide seams off the bridge and the Beer Can Island spit.

New Pass does the same at the south end, with the jetty rock and channel edge holding fish through both runs, and the deep grass flats just inside — Buttonwood Harbor's outer edge and the Radio Tower flat — carry resident fish through mild winters; the passes-and-inlets reference has both mapped. Rig long-shank number 1 to 1/0 hooks or jigs on 30–40 lb fluorocarbon; wire draws fewer strikes and is only worth tying on when the cut-off rate becomes unreasonable.

Boat access is Coquina Bayside just across the Longboat Pass bridge or Ken Thompson Park at New Pass (see the boat-ramp directory); shore anglers work the north-end beach accesses near Anna Maria Island, where Manatee County maintains small free lots. For 2026 here: 12-inch fork-length minimum, 15 fish per harvester, open year-round; check at MyFWC. Bleed and ice them straight away — fresh Longboat mackerel is the most underrated fish-dip material on the coast.
