Spanish Mackerel in Sarasota: The Spring and Fall Runs, and Where to Meet Them

Spanish mackerel arrive in Sarasota twice a year on a temperature clock. When Gulf water climbs past about 68 degrees in March, the spring run floods the beaches, passes, and nearshore reefs, peaking in April; the fall run peaks in October as bait flushes south, often running into November.

In between, summer fish work the nearshore reefs at first light and mild winters leave residents on the deep grass flats mixed with trout and bluefish. Finding them is a matter of looking up: diving terns and gulls over showering glass minnows mean mackerel, and the passes — Big Sarasota Pass and New Pass on an outgoing tide — concentrate the show.

The tackle answer is speed. Cast a half-ounce silver spoon, a Gotcha plug, or a small white jig past the activity and rip it back fast and erratic; a slow retrieve gets followed, a fast one gets crushed.

Trollers pull number 1 planers with Clarkspoons at 5–7 knots over the reefs and along the beach contours. Leader is the eternal debate: 30–40 lb fluorocarbon draws far more strikes than wire and costs you the occasional cut-off, so carry both and start with fluoro on long-shank number 1 to 1/0 hooks. The M-series artificial reefs 6–9 miles off the passes in 40–60 feet stack fish in both runs.

Regulations for 2026: 12-inch fork-length minimum, 15 fish per person, open year-round; verify at MyFWC. Bleed and ice fish immediately if you are keeping any, because their quality on the table is entirely about care in the first minute — fresh mackerel broiled the same day will surprise anyone who claims not to like it.
