Spanish Mackerel in Venice: Jetty Rocks, Pier Rails, and the April and October Runs

Venice is where the Spanish mackerel runs come within reach of anyone with a rod and a parking spot. The jetties at Venice Inlet and the 700-foot Venice Fishing Pier at Brohard Park both stand over the migration route, and when the spring run peaks in April and the fall run peaks in October, the mackerel push bait right past the rocks and the pier rails, often announced by diving terns and glass minnows.

The shore game is fast and simple: a silver spoon, a Gotcha plug, or a half-ounce white jig, cast past the breaking fish and retrieved as fast as you can crank, with an erratic twitch mixed in. Long-shank hooks and 30–40 lb fluorocarbon manage the razor teeth while drawing more strikes than wire; if the cut-offs get expensive, switch to a short trace of number 2 or 3 single-strand.

On the jetties, an outgoing tide flushing bait from the inlet is the prime window, and the fish often hold just off the rock line in the tide seam.

Note the South Jetty walkway has been closed for hurricane repairs, so use the North Jetty at Nokomis and check City of Venice status. Boaters do the same work over the V-reefs and limestone ledges a mile or two off the inlet in 17–25 feet.
