Trout Fishing in Charlotte Harbor: Big Flats, Big Drifts, and Winter Gators

Charlotte Harbor gives trout what they want at a scale Sarasota Bay cannot: mile after mile of healthy turtle grass in 3–8 feet of water, fed by two rivers and wrapped in preserve shoreline. The result here is a drift fishery where the question is usually less whether the trout show up than how big the average runs.

The program is the regional standard done on bigger water: set up on the grass flats off Cape Haze, the bar edges off Punta Gorda Isles, or the flats flanking the west wall, drift with the wind and tide, and work a live shrimp under a popping cork or a quarter-ounce jighead with a paddletail, fan-casting ahead of the boat.

When you find fish, note the depth and grass density and repeat the drift; harbor trout school by size, and adjusting fifty yards can turn 14-inch fish into 18-inch fish.

Spring and fall are prime, summer runs a strong dawn bite before the heat pushes fish deeper, and winter concentrates trout in the deeper holes, river edges, and the warm tannin water of the lower Peace and Myakka, where the biggest gators of the year eat slow-worked soft plastics on warm afternoons — the rivers-and-backcountry reference covers that water. Big trout over 20 inches are nearly all breeding females; photograph them in the water and let them go.
