Trout Fishing in Sarasota Bay: Deep Grass, Popping Corks, and Gator Season

Spotted seatrout are the bread and butter of Sarasota Bay, the most numerous gamefish in it and the best entry point the fishery has. The core technique has not changed in fifty years because it works: drift the deep grass flats in 3–8 feet — the Middle Grounds, the Radio Tower flat, the edges off Buttonwood Harbor and Ken Thompson Park — with a live shrimp under a popping cork.

Pop, pause, repeat; the cork imitates feeding fish and the shrimp closes the deal. It is also the best kids-and-beginners rig on the bay. Anglers who prefer casting bounce a quarter-ounce jighead with a 3–4 inch paddletail along the same drifts.

The calendar: March through May is prime as pre-spawn fish flood the flats, summer runs a dawn bite on the deeper edges before the heat pushes fish to 6–10 feet, fall reloads the bay with bait, and winter fish hold in the deeper grass, channels, and canals, where a slow presentation on warm afternoons produces.

The trophy game is separate: gator trout over 24 inches, nearly all big females, prowl skinny water at first light, and a full-size topwater walked across a pothole on the Bulkhead is the classic way to meet one. Handle them wet and release them — they are the spawning stock.
