Tarpon Fishing in Boca Grande: The Pass, The Hill Tides, The Boat Traffic

Boca Grande Pass is the deepest natural inlet on Florida's Gulf coast — roughly 80 feet deep in the legendary "Hole" between Gasparilla Island and Cayo Costa — and from April through June it holds more tarpon than anywhere on earth. Run it yourself or book a dedicated tarpon trip, but learn the pass first.

The fishery runs on the hill tides: strong outgoing water around the new and full moons flushes pass crabs off the Charlotte Harbor flats and through the pass, and the fish come up in rolling daisy chains to eat them. Line up a hill tide against first light in May and you can see hundreds of tarpon on top — check the tide tables before you commit. You will also see a hundred boats.

The fleet drifts the pass in regimented lanes, bow into the tide. Set up at the top, drift through, then run back around the outside. Never anchor, and never motor through the middle of a drift.

Know the special pass rules before you fish here — FWC enforces them hard in season. Tarpon are catch-and-release statewide, any fish over 40 inches stays in the water, and inside the pass any rig with the weight below the hook is banned year-round. April through June, breakaway gear is banned and each boat is capped at three deployed lines.

Standard setups drift a live pass crab or squirrelfish at 20–50 feet on 60–80 lb fluorocarbon and a 6/0–8/0 circle hook — the full approach is in our live-bait guide. Expect great hammerheads shadowing the fish; get every tarpon in fast, keep it wet, and let it swim off strong.
