Tarpon Fishing in Charlotte Harbor: Resident Fish, River Mouths, and the Road to Boca Grande

Charlotte Harbor is a 270-square-mile estuary, Florida's second largest, and it is the reason Boca Grande Pass holds the tarpon it does. But you do not need to fight the pass fleet to catch them here.

The harbor has a genuine resident fishery: fish hold in the deep harbor channel and the "tarpon hole" of the lower Myakka River, and adults stage off the Peace River mouth along the Ponce de Leon Park to Hog Island line before and after the pass show. From April through November, juvenile tarpon of 5–30 pounds roll in the Peace River from the US 41 bridges up and through the Punta Gorda perimeter canals — the best light-tackle tarpon fishing in the region, detailed in our rivers-and-backcountry guide.

The open-harbor program is dawn patrol: on slick summer mornings, idle the bar drop-offs off Punta Gorda Isles and the river mouths, watch for rollers, and throw a live threadfin, pinfish, or crab on a 5/0 circle hook and 60 lb fluorocarbon.

For the juveniles, scale down to 3000–4000 spinning gear, 30–40 lb leader, and small swimbaits, DOA Baitbusters, or live pilchards. Tarpon are catch-and-release only statewide and fish over 40 inches stay in the water (FWC tarpon rules).
