Tarpon Fishing in Venice: The Inlet, the Beaches, and the Outgoing Tide

Venice tarpon fishing is a May-through-July game built around the inlet and the beaches on either side of it. Venice Inlet is the only fully jettied, stable inlet in Sarasota County, and on outgoing tides in season it flushes bait and crabs into the Gulf where staging tarpon pick them off.

Boat fish work the color change and the bar edges outside the jetty tips, drifting live crabs or threadfins on 60–80 lb fluorocarbon and 5/0–7/0 circle hooks. The beach migration runs the whole coast here: strings push north past Caspersen Beach, Brohard, and Venice Beach in 10–25 feet, and calm first-light mornings in late May and June are when you will see them rolling.

Set up ahead of a string's line of travel, kill the motor, and let them come to you. Time it against the tide tables — the outgoing is everything.

Shore and pier anglers get honest shots too; tarpon track past the Venice Fishing Pier in season and occasionally eat a well-placed crab from the jetty rocks (see the piers-and-bridges guide). Note the South Jetty walkway at Humphris Park has been closed for hurricane repairs, so check the City of Venice site and fish the North Jetty side at Nokomis if it remains shut.

Launch at Higel Marine Park on Roberts Bay, the closest ramp to the inlet (see the boat-ramp directory). Statewide rules apply here: catch-and-release only, fish over 40 inches stay in the water, no multiple hooks with natural bait (FWC tarpon rules). The same outgoing tides that fire the tarpon also bring blacktips to the beach troughs, so end fights quickly and release fish fully revived.
