Tripletail in Sarasota: Running the Crab Trap Lines from October to May

Sarasota tripletail fishing tracks stone crab season, October 15 to May 1: run the trap buoy lines in 10-30 feet, sight-cast live shrimp, 2026 size rules.

Tripletail fishing in Sarasota runs on the stone crab calendar. When trap season opens October 15, thousands of buoys go down in 10–30 feet along the coast from Longboat Key past Venice, and tripletail move onto them almost immediately, holding beside the floats disguised as drifting leaves. The fishery stays strong through the cool months and ends when the traps come up May 1.

The method is pure sight fishing. Pick a buoy line, run it on plane with a spotter on the bow, sun high and polarized glasses on, and look for the brown shape lying flat on its side tight to a float, usually the down-tide or downwind side. When you spot one, swing wide, cut the motor up-current, and drift or trolling-motor into casting range.

A live shrimp on a 1/0 to 2/0 hook with 20–30 lb fluorocarbon, free-lined past the fish and brought across its window, is the standard. Cast past, never at, the fish.

A spooked tripletail sinks under its buoy but often resets within the hour, so mark it and come back. They fight far above their looks, jumping and digging for the trap rope, so steer hard immediately. Two rules matter: the 2026 regulations, an 18-inch total-length minimum and two fish per person, hook and line only, and the legal bright line that touching, pulling, or tying to a trap or buoy is prohibited, full stop — verify at MyFWC.

Midday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with light wind after a settled front is prime spotting weather. The reward for the run-and-gun is one of the best fillets in the Gulf, mentioned in the same breath as grouper by everyone who has eaten both.
