Dock Light Snook Fishing at Night in Sarasota, FL

Dock light snook fishing is Sarasota's marquee night specialty. The ICW from south Sarasota Bay through Roberts Bay and Blackburn Bay to the Venice airport stretch is the densest run of lighted docks on the Gulf coast — locals call the southern piece Snook Alley — and every green underwater light concentrates glass minnows and shrimp after dark, with snook stacked on the shadow edges facing into the current. It fishes year-round: summer is a numbers game on release-only fish, winter mixes in seatrout, and the best nights are incoming tides, dark moons, and calm wind. Fish the edge, not the light. Set up up-current and just outside the halo, cast past and up-current of the light, and swing the lure through the shadow line where the biggest fish sit deepest and darkest.

On spin — a 7-foot medium-light rod, 2500-3000 reel, 10 lb braid, 24 inches of 25-30 lb fluorocarbon — the standard is a DOA shrimp in glow dead-drifted with the current, or a 1/16-1/8 oz jighead with a 2.5-3 inch white paddletail. The take is a tick or a flash; reel-set and immediately steer the fish away from the pilings. Rest each light after a hookup or 15 casts and rotate six to ten docks. Etiquette is the fishery: the lights are private property, so never touch or tie to a dock, one boat per light, trolling motor only, no spotlights, voices down — lights that draw complaints get switched off.
