Live Bait Fishing for Snook in Sarasota, FL

The number one snook bait in Sarasota is a live scaled sardine — whitebait, pilchard, same fish — and the full live-bait program starts at dawn with a cast net, not at the tackle shop. From April through November, bait shows on the grass flats in 4-8 feet: the Middleground and Ringling flats, ICW markers, and the flats off Anna Maria's Bulkhead. Anchor up-current, deploy a chum bag, wait for the surface to dimple, and throw an 8-10 foot net on the shine. Keep the 3-4 inch baits and run the livewell about one pilchard per gallon, or they die by 9 a.m.

Then it is the standard SWFL guide method — live-chumming. Anchor up-current of a mangrove shoreline on the last of the flood, or a pass edge on the outgoing, and throw five to ten free baits at the cover.
