Sight Fishing Beach Snook in Sarasota, FL

The easiest sight fishing in Florida happens every summer morning on Sarasota's beaches, and most tourists walk right past it. From June through September, snook slide out of the passes and cruise the clear water along Siesta, Lido, Longboat, and Casey Key — often in less than a foot of water, backlit against white sand, sometimes ten feet from dry land. No boat, no ramp fee: this is a walk-the-beach fishery that rewards the angler at first light before beachgoers churn the shallows.

Sun angle drives the mechanics. Walk north to south so the light works for you, stay up on the dry sand to keep your profile off the water, and cast parallel to the beach — the fish travel the trough at your feet. Spot the fish, lead it 3-6 feet, land the lure softly, and move it only when the fish can see it.

The local edge is dropping the leader to 20 lb fluorocarbon. The standard 30 lb mangrove leader is visible against clean sand and costs you fish.

Tackle: a 7-foot to 7'6" medium spinning rod, 3000-4000 reel, 10 lb braid. Lures stay small and white — a 1/16-1/8 oz jighead with a small paddletail, a DOA shrimp, or a free-lined live pilchard on a 1/0 circle hook. Know the rules: the Sarasota Bay region closes snook harvest May 1 through August 31, so the entire beach season is catch-and-release by law.
