Topwater Snook Fishing in Sarasota, FL
Topwater snook in Sarasota: dawn walk-the-dog plugs on mangrove edges and beach troughs, Sept-Nov peak. Mono leader, single hooks, wait for the weight.
How It Comes Together.
A snook blowing up a walk-the-dog plug at first light is the loudest strike inshore fishing offers, and Sarasota's fall topwater season is built for it. The prime window runs September through November — water cooling back through the 70s, bait flooding the bay, and snook harvest reopening September 1 in the Sarasota Bay region after the summer closure. Work the first two hours of daylight: mangrove shorelines on a high flooding tide, oyster-bar edges in Roberts and Blackburn Bays, and the beach troughs off Siesta and Lido. Spring, March through April, gives a second good run.
Gear is specific for a reason. Use a 7-foot to 7'3" medium rod with a moderate-fast action, a 3000 reel, 15 lb braid, and 24 inches of 25-30 lb monofilament leader, not fluorocarbon — mono floats, and fluoro drags the plug's nose down and kills the walk. The local default is a bone Heddon Super Spook Jr; a MirrOlure She Dog buys noise when wind chops the surface. Many regulars swap trebles for single inline hooks — faster releases matter when half the year is closed.
When the water explodes, do nothing. Wait until you feel the fish's weight, then reel down and set. Swinging at the blowup pulls the plug away from more snook than any other mistake.
Missed fish often come back twice. Regulations: 28-33 inch slot, one per day, permit required, closed December 1 through February and May 1 through August 31 — check the FWC snook page and the snook season update, and when the surface bite dies, switch to live bait.
