Topwater Fishing for Gator Seatrout in Sarasota, FL
Topwater seatrout in Sarasota Bay: April-May dawn window for gator trout over 24 inches in 2-4 ft potholes. Cadence, plugs, and the one-over-19 rule.
How It Comes Together.
Most Sarasota Bay seatrout come on jigs and popping corks. The big females — gator trout over 24 inches — come on topwater plugs at gray light, and April and May are the months it happens. Pre-spawn fish push shallow at dawn onto the skinny grass of the Bulkhead and Palma Sola off Bradenton, and the deeper Sarasota flats around Long Bar and Stephens Point hold over-slot fish in the 2-4 foot potholes.
The pattern is a searching game: drift across a pothole-studded flat or wade the up-tide edge, make long casts down-light, and walk the plug — rod tip low, one to two wrist twitches per second, slack between each pull. No fish in ten casts, move fifty yards. Water temperature frames the season: the bite is best 68 to 84 degrees, which makes March-May and September-November the reliable windows — see what's biting in April. Time the moving water with the tides guide.
Tackle: a 7-foot medium rod with a moderate tip, 3000 reel, 15 lb braid, and 24 inches of 25-30 lb mono on a loop knot — mono floats, and the plug's action depends on it. A bone Super Spook Jr is the default; a small Pop-R covers dead-calm glass.
Trout have a soft, papery mouth. Wait until you feel weight before you reel-set, and keep a smooth drag — bulldogging tears hooks free.
Under the framework effective April 1, 2026, the Sarasota Bay region allows a 15-19 inch slot, three per person, and only one trout over 19 inches per vessel. Every gator is a breeding female — measure, photograph in the water, and release her. Verify on the FWC seatrout page.
